Temporary car insurance for US visitor

Hi,

We do a house swap with friends (they live in Florida and we live in here in the UK), and this time we have offered them the use of our car given extortionate car hire prices. I thought it would be relatively simple to add them to our car insurance but they (esure) won't do it. They have a US licence with an international DL/permit.

Does anyone have any recent experience of companies that may offer temporary cover (14 days in this case)?

Thanks, but I did use the search function before posting and one of the threads you quote is from 2008, and the other doesn’t really answer my question.

Last thread I read about this, there was a reply from somebody saying Direct Line would cover a visiting US relative on some of their policies, but even then it was a hit or miss affair trying to convince any given DL person at the contact centre that their policies allowed it.

The majority of other companies mentioned in that thread were a definite "computer says no".

Bottom line, all you can do is call your insurer up and see what they say.

Thanks Mark, will give Sterling a try as they seem to be one of the few companies that might be able to help.

Friend of mine came back from Australia for 2 weeks in June - it cost me £7 to insure him to drive my Merc C200 shed for the 2 weeks....

He's been in Australia since 2019 but still has a UK licence which I guess made a real good difference... I just added him as a temporary named driver - That was with Privilege Insurance.
