Any one else have the same issue as the following.

When driving with the wheel dead ahead any movement left or right needs a bit more pressure than I remember when new. It feels like theres a notch left or right of dead ahead. Once past the initial resistance it’s fine.

All driver aids are turned off so not that.

I’ll book it in to bmw but wondering if anyone else had similar.

The last 3 series suffered with wear to something called a ‘thrust piece’ so much so bmw came out with a specific repair kit. Maybe the new one has inherited the same problem?

My G20 has just started doing this today with driver aids on…

Not tried it with them off yet however I turned them off when parked and rocked the steering between 11 and 1. I can feel and hear a knocking noise. Do you have this too?

What did bmw say?

As the above poster has pointed out, this sounds very similar to issues with the F30/31 3 series. Our current F31 has had 2 replacement racks under warranty, and my previous F31 also had the same. Sounds like they’ve not designed it out yet.

Update to this.
Took the car in yesterday to fault find. Sods law the cars been fine for the past couple days and yesterday when I took it in.
The dealer couldn’t find anything wrong. No errors or stored codes.

They did a software update that apparently was connected to the electronic steering rack. Lets see if that fixes it or if it comes back.

The service bloke was decent and gave me his card and to contact him straightaway if it returns.

It’s difficult to fix something thats not broken and for now it’s not broken.

Did anyone manage to resolve this? I'm having the exact same issue and it's driving me mad! Thanks

Also interested in this as have exact same issue. Sometimes steering feels great, others it is notchy as hell & doesn’t matter if driver aids on or off.

Shame…great car apart from this issue.

Thanks for your reply anyway.

+1 on a 2021 M340i.

Seems to occur on longer 1h + motorway journeys - which means it can be quite jarring trying to make small steering corrections to stay in lane etc.

Looks to be the same Thyssenkrupp steering rack that was fitted to the F2/3x cars, which was also woefully inconsistent.

The steering always felt better in warmer weather to me. Stronger self centering and less inclination to stick at a few degrees off centre. That implies some kind of friction issue with the adjustable thrust block. Maybe stripping that out and shoving a load of much better quality grease in there might help.

My car required a new steering rack which resolved the issue.
