Porsche builds one-off 911 GTS for chariddy

See if you can guess the inspiration for a car ten months in the making...

Here’s a Friday afternoon story if ever there was one. Porsche and Pixar have teamed up to create the 911 Sally Special, a homage to the character from Cars. It’s going to be sold at RM Sotheby’s auction next Saturday as part of Monterey Car Week, with the proceeds going to Girls Inc and USA for UNHCR, an organisation helping Ukrainian refugees. All very nice.

The car is interesting, too, another 911 out of Exclusive Manufaktur and described by Porsche as ‘one of the most intense, emotional and detailed Sonderwunsch projects our team has worked on’. Ten months in the making, the Sally Special isn’t any old 911, either, but a manual Carrera GTS - “tapping into Sally Carrera’s passion for driving” according to Boris Apenbrink, head of Exclusive Manufaktur. The Sallybluemetallic paint is unique, too, another stunning Porsche blue that was here applied by hand. Style Porsche designers even came up with 20-/21-inch homage wheel to the 996 Carrera rim for the Sally Special.

It doesn’t stop with the outside, either. Oh no. There’s more Sallybluemetallic inside, with special three-colour Pepita houndstooth and Speed Blue stitching as well. But that does make this a manual 992 coupe with cloth upholstery - it’ll never sell with a spec like that…

Finally, this being a Porsche straight outta Sonderwunsch, there’s a Sally Special watch as well. (Don’t scoff, think of the charity.) Also designed with Pixar, the Porsche Design chronograph replicates the Sallybluemetallic and chalk leather scheme seen inside, with a second Speed Blue strap also offered. Those that know about such things might like to know that the watch is powered by a COSC-certified Porsche Design WERK 01.100 movement.

“We had great fun creating 911 Sally Special and it's the first time we've worked on a project of this kind," said Jay Ward, Creative Director of Franchise at Pixar. “We decided early on that we wanted to create a completely drivable 911 – inspired by Sally Carrera, but just not an exact copy. Sally Carrera loves to drive – that was our inspiration. We asked ourselves: if Sally were built today as a road-approved model, what would she look like?"

Understandably, the Sally Special goes to auction without a reserve or an estimate. The sky is often the limit with these things, too - Chevrolet has a tradition of auctioning off the first of certain Corvettes for good causes, and C8 Z06 number one sold earlier this year for $3.6m. And that didn’t even come with a watch. So expect Sally Special to make a pretty penny come next Saturday. Fingers crossed Sallybluemetallic makes it onto the Paint to Sample palette at some point soon, too...

Could have at least used 996 style headlights.

That's pretty cool.

And for a great cause, too. So a double thumbs up.

Am I the only one that thinks that rear end is really ugly?

I’m with you on that, I think the 992 has taken a step backwards in the looks department altogether. It’s too large imho. That interior trim looks good tho

The side shot gave me serious 996 Carrera 4s vibes.
Must be the wheels.
Looks superb!

We’ve gone full circle from 996 owners trying to make their cars look like 997s, now
Porsche trying to make a 992 look like a 996!

Cool…. Wheels are fabulous, in a sea of complex stuff a crisp 5 spoke is excellent on this.

Great that the money will be going to charity... the cynic in me assumes that this story, being spread across the worldwide motoring press, is more than paying for the cost of the car in advertisement value.

Lovely spec, that's a gorgeous colour. I'm not an expert in the Cars movies - does the real Sally Carrera have a tramp stamp?! eek

I am tempted by the colour but the steering wheel is on the left.

Old news. Porsche already have this in the museum in Stuttgart. Wife standing in front for tongue in cheek photo not included.
