Post accident my car, an MX5, is in the workshop being repaired. The replacement offered by the insurace company is a small SUV, which isn't a suitable stand in.

Is it simpler to use a claims management company to get a more appropriate vehicle, or is there some other route I should try.

This is a no fault claim, the other party's insurer has already accepted full liability.

Do you have like for like repalcement on your cover? If not then you're probably stuck wiith it. If so then point that out to your insurers and see what they say.

Not my insurance paying for it.

You have an obligation to keep the value of the claim down but it’s usually possible to get a replacement car changed if what you’ve been offered is unsuitable. We’ve had that, for example, when we’ve needed one that will tow.

The obvious question really is “why is a small SUV unsuitable”?

ETA: if you use an accident management company, you may well face questions from the other side’s insurers about why you did that instead of hiring one yourself, what other vehicles you have access to, etc…

I wouldn't bother. Life will throw more important fights at you. The SUV is only temporary.

Yep. This.

Most accident repair centres will have a car of choice and they tend to go with a small car like a Corsa, Fiesta or Micra. Some might adopt a 'one car suits all scenarios' policy and a small SUV might just about cover most options.

It's only for a short period of time so I'd say wear it.

The only time I ever rejected a loan car was when they offered a Ka as a replacement for the XC90. Two kids under 5 and their stuff simply wouldn't fit.

But that aside, this is the most first world of first world problems. Do us all a favour and keep premiums down by just accepting a perfectly decent car for a couple of weeks.

When my Jaguar XF was being repaired following an accident I was offered a Ford Fiesta. I said I was not happy and I wanted an automatic anyway. Was given a BMW 7 series. No complaints!.

So, it can be done.

I went from a Jaguar XK convertible to a Vauxhall Astra for two weeks. The only niggle was that the other party, being the innocent one, got a BMW because he was allowed to have an equivalent to his usual car. On my ruddy premium!

You can go with a claims management company but the daily rate will be massive and you will have to pretend you had to, there was no alternative, you were entirely reasonable and impecunious, and that you genuinely believed you were liable for the full costs with no side promises from the claims management company not to worry and it's just a sham to rinse as much money from the third party as possible.

And part of your soul will die.

But hey ho, anything to avoid the shame of the car you've been offered.

If it's the other person's insurance then they are under no obligation to change it as you have no contract/agreement with them. Only thing you can do is ask and see if they're willing to be helpful. Most will, as they'd rather you didn't go through your own insurance as it will bump up the costs.

Probably a case of not enough courtesy cars around currently but imho you may struggle to argue a small SUV isn’t suitable.
Other way round arguably easier !

I feel the OPs pain, my A110S has been off the road since the beginning of June due to a non fault accident and is likely to be another couple of months yet. The insurance company have supplied me with a Corsa SRI as a courtesy car. I have been tempted to kick up a fuss and ask for a similar replacement, but life too short and I can’t be doing with the hassle and, dare I say it, I’m beginning to like the Corsa getmecoat On the plus side we’re using the Corsa for all our daily motoring so it’s saving mileage and cost on our family wagon smile

Courtesy of credit hire? What's the daily rate?
