Polestar 6 Roadster confirmed for production

The Polestar O2 concept went down a storm, so they're building it - but not until 2026...

When we were with Polestar at Goodwood earlier in the summer, standing around its O2 roadster concept, Thomas Ingenlath, the firm’s CEO, told us the company doesn’t do pointless concepts that have no basis in future production. So we told you to expect a production version to appear and, guess what? It will. Just don’t bank on it coming with a drone, like the concept, that will follow you taking pictures from on high as you drive, ready to upload straight to social media.

Hopefully, that’s not too much of a disappointment. Or the fact that you’ll have to wait until 2026, which seems like an awfully long time to hang about for a design that’s already out there. And which you can reserve online, from today.

It's going to be called the Polestar 6 and, of course, being a Polestar, it’ll be an electric high-performance roadster. A hard-top convertible that’ll be built on Polestar’s in-house and bespoke platform made from bonded aluminium. It's the same platform that's been confirmed for the 2024 Polestar 5, so the roadster will also feature 800-volt electric architecture and it’ll have some oomph. The outputs match those advertised for the 5, at 884hp and 664lb ft from the dual-motor powertrain. That equates to a projected 0-62mph time of 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 155mph.

To begin with, there will be 500 numbered editions of the Polestar 6. These will be called the LA Concept edition, and feature that unique ‘Sky’ blue paint and the 21-inch alloys and light leather upholstery that appeared on the original O2 concept.

Ingenlath says that “with the overwhelming consumer and press response, we took the decision to put this stunning roadster into production and I am so excited to make it a reality. Polestar 6 is a perfect combination of powerful electric performance and the thrill of fresh air with the top down.”

If you missed the O2 Concept at Goodwood and you happen to be in California, then it’ll be back on display there at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance for Monterey Car Week. And it’s worth seeing in the flesh, because, as you can see from the pictures, by crikey it’s a cracking-looking thing.

Could someone please come up with a concept that doesn't involve ridiculous power and cost a fortune? These outputs are crazy. Tone it down and increase the range! If it works that way.......

$25k deposit a bargain compared to Tesla Roadster's £38k, and 2026 is less time than we've been waiting for the Tesla since its announcement in 2017...

I'll take three of each.

Has there ever been a concept car that ever ended up looking the same once in production?

Can't think of many right now.

The most egregious recent example is the Honda E which went from highly appealing as a concept to anon blob in production.

Let's hope they retain focus with this.

How is it that with ~880bhp it only does 0-62 in 3.2? A Tesla Model 3 Performance does 0-60 in 3.1 with almost half that.

A sports car with a massive iPad on the dashboard. What could possibly go wrong?

Apart from that I rather like it.

I'm not sure it does... I may well be talking nonsense but my understanding is that in EVs, power and range are functions of the same thing. Obviously using less of the available performance will maximise the range you get out of a battery.

Higher priced cars make for better margins, and Polestar is positioned as premium. We'll have to wait for MG and other Asian manufacturers to come up with affordable ones.

Yes - the concept Polestar Precept has become a production Polestar 5.

Did you really say “only 3.2”?!

Traction, weight, tuning and literally every other factor affects this. Polestar don’t have an axe to grind to don’t need to be the “fastest at x”

Only 3.2… get a hold of yourself.

Polestar underestimate the performance claims a bit as well.

The P2 was claimed at 4.7 seconds at launch but in testing I have seen it was low as 4.1/4.2 real world.

I believe Tesla quote a 1 foot roll-out as well (at least in the states)

No one is honest about 0-60 times anymore. A lot of it is they don’t want to embarrass the ice cars but even ice cars 0-60 arnt accurate anymore.

2022 Tesla M3P is 554bhp

ETA: they are mostly traction limited at this point.

Tesla will probably be lighter.

And this is the concept that eventually became the Polestar 2...

i have to be honest, it looks a bit fat, imagine it's not going to feel like the traditonal "Roadster" to drive. The design is nice of course, just a bit of a porker!

BMW i3 series production was pretty similar to the concept. Both still look brilliant to these eyes.

Love this Polestar 6, really like all the Polestars in fact; there are many facets of their design language that appeal to me.

Lexus LC was practically unchanged too.
