Probably a million other threads, but what is it with low balling at the moment? Dealer trade in is laughable (yes it’s not a wreck lol) and below wbac so why bother, yet dealer retail is literally insane, like 10 grand above wbac, now I know they need to make a profit but come on!

I’ll hang on to my existing fleet indefinitely at this rate, and I am a serial car changer.

Because they’ve overpaid for current stock, and now need to shift it without taking a bath.

All the cocky traders that took the piss and milked the situation post lockdown are facing a stiff coffee call.

All that hubris and arrogance is disappearing rapidly; now their hard fought for and overpriced stock takes root Their valued customers can and will no longer pay through the nose.

What goes around comes around.

Dealer group offer price for my car at the moment is around 78% of retail, even if I was buying something else from them. Best car buying service price is currently around 10-12% better.

Why not try and sell privately?

You can legitimately ask somewhere in between retail pricw and wbac quotes which at the moment makes a big difference.

There are a lot of professional scammers, thieves and cheats out there. I am not sure I would want to risk selling a high value car. I sold a £5k horse trailer recently and the buyer made it very unpleasant. I did not lose my money but they did try to cheat me post sale.

It’s how people make money really.
Most are desperate to sell their car quickly with no hassle so I know people deliberately low ball just in the hope it will be accepted and sometimes is.

That's very true. It's risky and involves some hassle which is why places like wbac are so popular. But a private sale could put an extra couple of grand in your pocket for your trouble if that matters to you. Depends what you're selling really. The last car I sold privately was two years ago. Sold via AT and had no bother from scammers. It went quite quickly for about £1200 more than wbac quoted so was worth it for me.

Other than that, if a dealer offers a low part ex price then just let wbac (or similar) take it instead.

Dealers car may be 10k over WBAC but remember WBAC is not retail - it is effectively just a trade in system that then punts the cars off to auction and they then aim to make a profit. Dealers will buy those cars from auction which then means they need to add more on top for their own profit, prep, warranty, overheads etc.

Really can’t stand traders if I’m honest. Always got an unfavourable price from them and it’s always with their patter of doing me a favour.

My Recent example was I had a stunning 2015 Boxster S for sale. No firm offer in 6 weeks and a trader came along wasting so much of my time asking for so much detail. I’m April made me an offer of 35k on a 41k advertised price.
Sure low ball if you want but don’t make it out to be your doing me a favour with we collect and market is softening etc . Wbac had it at 38k.

Sold it private for 41.5k. It then popped up again 3 months later at a Porsche dealer for 46k and sold within a week.

So you sold the car for MORE than the advertised price?

The person wanted to take on the remaining Porsche warranty I had on it so calculating I took 200 less advertised price. Warranty prob worth 700 if I had it refunded to me which Porsche do.

Agree, tbh. Had a few traders contact me about my 350Z in Dec 2020; one guy didn't say he was trade, tried to argue me down based on the spec. Well the spec was in the ad, if you don't want a car in that spec then you can sod off and waste someone else's time!

It sold for full asking to a genuine enthusiast private buyer a week later.

Moral of the story, if you advertise a car online then expect traders to contact you and try it on. Ignore their drivel and hold on, if the car's at a fair market price then a genuine buyer will come along sooner or later and will be a lot easier to deal with. Noli illegitimi carborundum!

(Or sell an old rotary, won't get any traders calling then!)

I've sold a good few privately but they tend to be much cheaper sales. On anything ~10k+ I'd take a slight reduction for the relative safety of wbac but the dealers were clearly taking the piss chancing their arm... laugh
