When buying a car with a private plate?

Hi, guess it's been asked before but I'm looking to buy a car with a private plate but the seller wants to retain the plate.
I believe the change can be done "on line" now with GOV.uk (am I right) but what about the MoT?
When I come to tax it on the original reg (I assume it just gets the original reg) will GOV.uk be able to cross reference?

When the plate is taken off the car the MOT etc automatically is recorded under the replacement plate.

If the owner wants to take the plate off then get them to do it before you buy it.if they do it online they will have to wait a few days for a new V5C. You can then buy the car

Thanks, so it changes automatically in the "system". No need for a retest or a trip to the MoT station for a revised certificate?

Yeah. There is zero connection between MoT and changing to/from a private plate - the DVLA are smart enough to know that it's the same car with the same MoT history, regardless of which plate it's wearing.

IMHO anyone selling a car and wishing to retain the private plate should really get it changed back to its original plate beforehand, or at least between the sale being agreed and the buyer collecting it. That way they have the new V5 with the original registration, and you can go through the normal used car purchase process.

As Scrump says, the seller can do it online, but then needs to wait for the DVLA to post them their new V5 with the original reg, in order to give you the correct new keeper slip and/or transfer ownership online. I think it was about a week when I bought such a car.
