looking at buying a car from the south coast (Poole) and having it transported up to Scotland. I've had a few quotes from Shiply but anyone else recommended please? It's about 550 miles/10 hours.
Thanks

There’s a PHer with this as his business - iguana, I think, of Lizard Logistics or similar.

Worth looking up and asking, and I think others on PH have used him too.

You could try asking fellow PHers iguana ( Lizard Logistics) or melv ( Flyingbluedog Trailer Services). smile

Not sure if I'm allowed to name names, but I recently shipped a car from Manchester to Aberdeen using Quickshifter in Perth - guy called Austin. If I ever need to move any cars again he'll be the first one I call. Trailer delivered towed by a big 4x4. Can be found on Facebook. Made first contact on the Tuesday and had the car on Saturday morning. Decent price too.

I've also used a company called AIC transport near Peterhead to deliver from London to Aberdeen. They use artic transporters so you kind of have to wait until your job is on their route schedule, but they were the cheapest by miles (circa £400).

This, bus to Glasgow (£1 as I'm a pensioner) flight down to Southampton £291. Drive back about £150 of fuel. Might need an overnight stop somewhere.
Shiply were quotes from £770 upwards, more "reputable" were upwards of £1300+.

Train was £163 but who knows if it'll be running or on strike.

Thanks to all who suggested companies but road trip it is!

Always wondered how "legal" these outfits are that use a 4x4 to tow a large trailer carrying another large car for hire and reward

Total "train" weight, towing capacity, con and use regs, correct insurance etc

Friend of mine did it - properly and every base covered and he was being continually undercut by others he had no idea how they could make money

I use 2016 Touaregs to tow my 3500kg rated enclosed/open trailers. Well under 7000kg train weight limit.

£1m Goods in transit insurance, £5m public liability insurance and £300k trade insurance = circa £13,000pa.

Far too many cowboys out there. My running costs are roughly £1.20pm enclosed (I charge £2.50pm) and 85p open (I charge £1.75).

If you get someone offering to transport your pride and joy for £1pm.. They’re 100% running illegally.

£291 for a flight from GLA to SOU?!?!

If you are overnighting, then shirley a flight from GLA to LHR/LGW and a train to Poole would be far cheaper?

I like to scrimp on car collections, and run the gauntlet when collecting cars. My last Scottish trip was: National Express from Maidstone to LGW for £10, LGW to GLA with BA for £54, EasyHotel for £26 (I paid £2 extra for a window and wish I didn't as it overlooked an office block).

Got a really polite response from PCP and would have used him but decided the "road trip" would be "more fun" and cheaper. Never been to Southampton before or anywhere near. Best quotes off that well known quote site were £707, more generally £825. A guy local to me who does recovery did say "don't use them, uninsured etc etc" His quote was closer to PCP and in £four figures IIRC as he needed to include for an overnight stop etc.

Bump. I have a friend looking to have a car transported from circa 500 miles away to their home. My first suggestion was road trip however the flights seem to be at least a few hundred quid, would be 2x tickets for someone to accompany him to drive it back.

Enquired with a few outfits awaiting to hear quotes

I can give you the number of the guy who did Yorkshire to West Scotland for me. He seems to spend his life on the road, from London northwards.

Bear in mind that if the GVW (towing vehicle, trailer and your vehicle being transported) is over 3.5t then for any commercial transport, the towing vehicle is required by law to have a tacho fitted (and the driver needs a card and to adhere to tacho rules). Police and particularly VOSA have been clamping down on this, and if your chosen contractor is not compliant and gets pulled, his outfit is getting impounded, at which point your new toy’s journey home comes to a sudden stop.

A lot of the bigger SUVs are 2t or more, a decent car trailer is going to be 600-700kg, so it’s not difficult to exceed 3.5t once loaded. Vans are another kettle of fish - many have a GVW well under 3.5t so they’re not going to cut it, tacho or not.

The ones who offer a cheap service are unlikely to be legal (if their outfit exceeds 3.5t).
