Apparently two years ago my account of 20yrs was closed and then immediately a new account was opened. I and they have know idea why this happened.

It turns out there was a paltry £183 outstanding on the old account. They have never informed me of this outstanding amount and have made no attempt to take the money via a direct debit set up many many years ago.

A month ago they reported me to the credit rating agencies for non payment of the £183 over many months and as a consequence my credit rating went from perfect to around half.

The first I knew of all this was when my credit card limit was cut to a 3rd. A right pain just before the holibobs. Iv'e never needed to worry about this credit rating lark before but now it is getting inconvenient.

Rang BG spent an hour on phone. Was clear on their system that the above was correct and operator agreed with me. 10 days to escalate and all would be resolved. 3 weeks later, no response. So rang back and all I got was the case has been closed due to lack of information.

How the hell do I get them to sort it and take my predicament of their making seriously.

The bank reinstated the credit limit after a phone call but this problem will return in the future if not sorted. The credit rating agency aren't interested until BG respond to them. I have no way of even paying this outstanding amount (not that I'm inclined) even if I wanted to as I've received no bill to pay.

Tried that and refuses to recognise me as a customer

Think I'm going to need something a little more proactive than that as I've already done this the first time with ref number and the response as stated above was "Insufficient information, case closed".

Did you go to the regulator as a next step?

It could be as simple as their reminder e-mails going into spam. And so when they got no reply from you, procedures were invoked...

Nope , I'm a by post customer. The operator at BG admitted no bills had been issued and if they had why hadn't it just come out on DD. I wouldn't of even notice it.

It's the Energy Ombudsman you will escalate your complaint to.

Energy companies can only back bill 12 months. If they haven't ever tried to collect they would appear barred from doing so now.

Yep as others have said go to the regulator. I went after EDF spectacularly failed to install smart meters after 10 months, multiple visits, multiple cancelled visits and lots of lies.

All I wanted was the meters working. In the end I got an engineer that knew what she was doing plus several hundred pounds compensation.

Be aware though that if the regulator finds in your favour the energy company will appeal as a matter of course, so keep pressing and don't accept the first response if you disagree

British Gas are an absolute nightmare. I sorted my problem through a member of their exec team who was the only competent person I came across. Got a big chunk of money back, apology and resolved the issue for the future. PM me and I will give you a contact.

I had major problems with BG (slightly similar to yours) and their incompetent customer service. I kept getting nowhere despite them raising tickets and forwarding on to another teamand escalating it blah blah.

Send an email to: jana.siber@britishgas.co.uk

I got a call from someone senior the next day who sorted out the matter.
