Reported for 100mph - motorway coppers

Just watching motorway cops and driver filmed in excess of 115mph on motorway (70mph). Copper reports him in excess of 100mph and banner pops up saying driver fined £224 and 3 points. WTF

Caveat- it's tv and channel 5. But is this possible as it seems overly lenient or TV talking crap?

BTW he should have been reported for dodgy haircut

I think the threshold changed a few years back from 95 to 90mph where anything above should be a summons and either a ban or minimum of 4-6 points + fine ..

Unless he somehow got away with not being summoned to court..

No, fixed penalty to 96mph

I got done for 105-110mph and got a S59 at the time, then 6 points/£300 fine in court (after lowering my net income with pension contributions)

When I was summonsed the threshold was upto 95 for fixed penalty.. I was doing 96 and still ended up with the full 6 points despite being at the lowest end of the guideline.

This suggests the threshold is now 90?

That’s only if you don’t qualify for a fixed penalty.

He would have gone to court for that speed. The fact he got a £224 fine would mean he didn’t get a fixed penalty ticket (that would be £100).

Three points seems odd though as sentencing guidelines would suggest more points. Could be a typo.

I’m going to guess the 3 points was miscommunicated when the show was produced - in reality it’s way beyond that.

Somerset local rag yesterday. Lad did 115 on a dual carriageway. £430 and 21 day ban.

I don't know why cops can't give an instant 28 day ban as they do in Australia. Maybe idiots would think twice then. I'd also seize their car for 28 days.

Rime the UK stopped this crazy sentencing where one guy in a road chase gets fine £100 and a 6 week ban, while another gets £500 fine, 6 month suspended sentence etc.

Why not just have a rule like - get stopped speeding once, minimum fine £1,000 and car taken away for 14 days. Get stopped a second time, minimum fine £2,500 and car taken away for 28 days days. Get stopped third time, lifetime ban, £10,000 fine and car donated to charity. Maybe then, speeding dheads light learn a lesson

No thank you, why would you want to make this ahole of a country anymore draconian than it already is? Wont be long before we need a licence to walk to the shops, put on house arrest for dangerously overtaking on foot.

By your wording, if I was doing 85mph on an empty motorway, I get caught and £1000 fine and no car for 14 days,

You don't get points and a ban, it is one or the other, but not both. Either your colleague made up what happened or you've misremembered what they said happened.

There is no instant 12 month ban for getting caught speeding in Scotland so I very much doubt that would have been his punishment if it had happened in Scotland.

If a child repeatedly breaks windows with a cricket ball no matter how many times he's caught and told to stop, at some point you take the ball away. Same difference.

??? If he'd been caught in Scotland (where he lives), the points he would have received would have taken him to 12+ & so he'd have received a ban.

Minimum ban for totting up is 6 months. Quote was 6 weeks, therefore not totting up.

You said he got a 6 week ban and 6 points. You don't get a ban and points - it is one or the other.

If he'd received the points, in England or Scotland, he'd have got a totting ban (unless he'd successfully argued exceptional hardship). That would have been a 6 month disqualification not 12 as you stated. The only way it would be 12 months is if he'd already had a disqualification in the previous 3 years.

If he had received a totting ban then when he got his licence back it would have had 0 points on it and not 15 as points are removed following a totting ban.

Like I said - It didn't happen.

I find it surprising people think 100mph is a lot. Of course depends on circumstances blah blah blah. But general day to day clear weather on a motorway honestly you’d be holding traffic up doing 70 on motorways I frequent.

The rules for totting up are exactly the same in Scotland as they are in England. So unless every case you have heard of involved someone who had already been disqualified in the previous 3 years then you are talking nonsense.
