So decided to help my father out and advertised his XF estate on Pistonheads, asking £37k. Here’s the enquiry I received within a day, and here’s the following email chain. Thoughts please. (Car was a 2021 model, facelift, quite rare). And yes I know really I should have ignored it all.

Lead message:
" Hello, I'm interested in this car. Is it still available? If so Id offer you a realistic price of £25K?

Clive

Me:

Take your realistic price and go buy the other new shape XF that’s for sale…..oh wait it’s £47k!!

Time waster

Clive:

They’re living in Cuckoo land too!!

Me:

It’s nice there this time of year

Clive (two days later)

How strangely odd that yours is still up for sale. It will be for a very long time too at the ridiculous price you’re wanting. Wake up man and get real!!

Me (wound up by now but slightly enjoying it):

You’re a very strange man. It’s been up for sale for 5 days, hardly a long time

I’m selling it on behalf of my father who has already been offered £29600 part exchange against his new Aston. We don’t care if it takes a while to sell, got more important st to worry about

Go waste somebody else’s time. We don’t want or need your money even if you gave the asking price.

Clive:

Seems you’re well known for being a time waster…

Clive:

So why the hell are you asking as much as you are then? I’ve got one now anyway

And again

Sure I am. That’s why I was able to buy one for a sensible price from a reputable dealer and avoid being ripped off by a novice no idea private buyer portraying to think he knows what he’s talking about but you clearly haven’t got a Scooby Doo!!

Me:

Sold the car today for £35k

Stick that in your pipe you time wasting pillock

When I sold my W211 I had someone message me within a few hours with an offer for £850, when I replied saying no thanks I'll keep it for that, he sent me a massive diatribe saying how deluded I was, how he'd bought 7 in the last year for the same price, etc.

Ended up selling it the following week for £2200.

Feel free to share Clive's contact details. I'm looking to sell a Jag soon and could benefit from his useful insights...

Very immature, but I can't say I wouldn't have done something similar. Loved the "its nice there" comment, in particular smile

There are lots of Clives out there. They are imbeciles.

What a donkey.

At least he wasn't one of the truly special cases who think that WBAC or price guide values are the market value of the car.

I can completely understand why you responded the way you did. However I'd always be a bit wary of them cominga round to my house with a baseball bat - there are a lot of nutters out there.

Ha. Well, I bet he hasn't really bought the car and was just trying to make you feel like you missed out.

I put my E350 on eBay starting at 99p and you always get that hopeful bid at the beginning from someone who is happy to pay 99p for it but doesn't bid again.

I recently advertised an X3 35D for £21,500 online.

Got offers as low as £14,000 with some comments along the lines of WBAC will do the same etc.

Ended up selling to a franchise dealer for £19,000 which I was happy with.

Lots of dreamers, timewasters, chancers and complete morons out there.

I was selling an old Alfa 156 for £2k, plenty in the classifieds asking for more.

A woman contacted me to say she'd looked up my model on a secondhand valuing website that said it was worth £350 and would I accept that as it would never sell for what I wanted.

I pointed out that as it was an enthusiasts car, in very good almost new condition, the so called book price meant nothing.

I had not long before sold my old 3 series, book price £400, for over £2k.

Funny how strangers like to pick arguments, safety of a keyboard I guess.

Anyway I sold the Alfa a day later for £1800.

Years back I tried to p/x my 3 series to Sytner.

They commented, 'is it really worth anything?'

Sold it for £7500 the following week.

Just got another question “would you consider a PX for a motorbike “
Nowhere did I say I wanted a motorbike. I suppose it’s on the list of a million other things I didn’t say I didn’t want.

Not immature, more just wasting your own time replying to these chancers..

When selling my Porsche, I had one or two lengthy conversations with people telling me it was worth much less.
However unlike your rather hostile replies I preferred to keep things polite and actually try to establish what ‘lower priced’ comparable cars they were seeing which I was missing.

Similar answers every time, they sent me links for either high mileage, ropey examples or black colour Porsches (there’s an abundance of black ones whereas mine was a sought after rarer colour)

I like to feel I came on top of those chats without the need of abuse but more showing them why mine was priced as it was.. sold for the asking price in the end so I wasn’t far wrong!

I bought a Volvo c30 about 10 years ago for £6100 when the car had initially been up for £7500.
Sometimes laying £6000 on a guys coffee table in £100 notes (scotland) can get you a cheeky discount.

I was selling my Tuscan in 2015 for about £16k.

Someone got proper arsey with me because I wouldn’t match his offer for £12k that one was priced at with no history at Target Cars in Eindhoven.

selling a cycle recently of FB £495

apart from two scammers nowt for 2 weeks.

Then

"380"

nothing else whatsoever.

So I emailed back what?

"380 pounds" was the reply.

I emailed back askin' the lad to try to string together a coherent sentence.

To be fair he did a bit after that. But wanted a bike for "lightweight touring" whatever that is.

Thankfully I sold it a few days later after two more sensible enquiries.

But out of the blue: "380" WTF!

OP: No you were not immature. These people shouldn't be allowed to breed but sadly do hence the state of the country and world.
