I live in Leeds and would like to visit a couple of aircraft crash sites, ideally within 1.5-2hrs from me. I know there are plenty in the Peaks so this is probably where I’ll head (unless someone suggests otherwise).

My question is, which are the best (poor choice of word I know) or most complete wrecks to visit near me? Ideally I’d like to see military aircraft…

Start with the RB-29 on Bleaklow. That’s probably got the largest amount of recognisable bits of aircraft. The rest - at least in the Peak District - aren’t that great. There are a couple of Sabres near Kinder which also have clearly recognisable bits, but much smaller amounts. The Stirling near Margery Hill was pretty impressive when I went in about ‘98, but a lot was removed by the RAF on behalf of a Stirling preservation group. Apart from that you’re looking at fragments with the odd larger bit here and there.

Drive to the summit of the Snake Pass and park up. There are a couple of wreckages within twenty minutes walk in each direction, as post above and also the one at Mill Hill is worth seeing too, next to the path down to Chunal.

Please note access is only possible from the west via Glossop at the moment due to road collapse works on The Snake.

Zoom in on Google earth, you can see them.
