Toyota MR2 (SW20) | Spotted

Mid-engine, Ferrari looks (ish), Toyota reliability. The perfect blend, and all for less than £10,000...

There’s a fella near me with a Mk2 Toyota MR2. It’s a bit scruffy and has a dodgy set of white, five-spoke rims, but he often parks it outside my place and it makes me happy. The MR2’s a car I never fully appreciated in its heyday. Sure, I liked it, but the more I wander past my neighbour’s black one – and the more I’ve studied it, the way you do with old cars you see regularly that become like friends – the more it’s grown on me. Really grown in me, actually. It really is a fabulous-looking car.

One of the very best-looking Japanese sports cars, I reckon. Now, let me qualify that. Sure, a 2000GT is as beautiful as a magnificent sunset in Alps, but those are going up in price at the same stratospheric rate as energy companies’ profits. The original NSX is also a looker and as iconic as Andy Warhol, but there are more than a few of those pushing £100k or more. So if we’re talking Japanese cars that the average Jo can buy – you and I – then is there anything more handsome than Mr. MR2 Mk2?

I like it because it does what Japanese cars do best. It’s a copycat car. A bit of a rip-off design, just like the MX-5 was. Only here the styling’s not faux British but Italian. It’s very Pininfarina, don’t you think? This is why it was often referred to as the poor man’s Ferrari. Whatever, it pulls off the look brilliantly, which isn’t always the case with fakes. It’s so lovely and compact and there really isn’t an untoward angle anywhere. In fact, the proportions – in terms of wheelbase and length – are just spot on, and sit so right on its relatively dinky 15-inch wheels. Even the details, like the light clusters – an area where Japan’s stylists often become overwrought – look restrained and dignified and perfectly in keeping. Bravo Uchida-san, who is the fella 'what' penned it.

And of course, it’s got those vents in front of the rear wheels. Vents that signify it’s mid-engined. A proper sports car, in other words, in a way that the front-engined, front-wheel drive Lotus Elan from this era wasn’t. Some will tell you that the handling was a bit spikey thanks to the weight being concentrated in the middle. It’s true, it was. But if you go for a post-1993 Rev-2 model that was addressed with longer rear toe links, different anti-roll bars and wider tyres. This car’s even later than that, so I reckon you should be fine.

It also has Toyota’s 3S-GE twin-cam 2.0-litre, with 173hp when you ring it out to 7,000rpm with the short-throw, five-speed 'box. And it’s a non-interference engine, so should you have the cambelt ping the valves won’t be embedded in the pistons, which brings us onto reliability. It’s a Toyota. Look after the mechanicals with a modicum of respect and it’ll never die. The main issues to look out for include stone damage to the low-slung radiator at the front and rust. Rust is the thing that kills MR2s, so check everywhere. The inner and outer sills, the boot floor, around the seatbelt mounts, the arches, the rear subframe and the A pillars.

This one has low miles, which even with Toyota’s legendary reliability is no bad thing. And it’s not red – the paint on red MR2s nearly always fades. The diamond-cut alloys look like they’re due a refurb but the bodywork looks tidy and so does the interior. And it’s leather, which adds an extra element of swishness, as does the T-Bar roof. What a great way to enjoy what’s left of the summer, for not a huge amount of cash.

(Mike Duff is on hols; Brave Pill will return next week!)

Nice car for the money in the current market. For sale in Aberdeen though so hopefully it's not seen too much time by the sea or has been well looked after.

John: ever thought of taking a few basic classes in grammar and journalism to boost your literacy? You like cars, we get it, but you do need more than enthusiasm to write about them. Your prose is unreadable.

Lovely cars.

This looks like a Rev 4 to me from around 1997 not 2000.

Italian looks and Japanese reliability. Nice low mileage car too.

They look best when they are UK cars and unmodified like this one. No dodgy wheels or body kits.

These have been under-rated for years.

And they have pop-up headlights. A great relief from the endless grey, square boxes that everybody drives nowadays.

Gets my vote.smile

I'm not so sure about Ferrari styling, I would say it has more in common with the styling of American cars of the time. Personally I think it looks a bit flabby and bloated. Don't get me wrong, it's a great car, I just think it was the worst of the 3 MR2s, which isn't such a bad place to be.

Lovely looking car. If as the protective paper floor mat put in by the garage suggests, that it has been serviced with Valvoline Oil, then it will have had no expense spared. Probably the best oil out there.

Well, they claim it is a 2000, 'W' plate car so maybe it sat around for a few years before it was registered or a previous keeper has changed the rear spoiler and wheels.

Looks all the better for it as the Rev 5 had awful wheels and a horrible spoiler.

So maybe this is the perfect MR2. From 2000, the last year the mark 2 was sold and with the best looking wheel and spoiler combo.

Wake up and decide to be this obnoxious or is it just normal?

I had no issues with this article and don't with any by this author for a light reading piece-particularly given this is free content.

There are better ways to outline your issues than the approach you have taken.

Many years ago I owned a couple of mk2 turbos. I've loved the shape of these ever since, as a child, a neighbour rocked up with a brand new one in laser blue. I was bowled over by this crazy spaceship-looking-thing.

In its day, the mk2 was always maligned by an image of being slightly porky next to the other 2 generations, but I'm not sure how much that matters now. If you're after the sharpest tool then you'll be looking for an Elise or whatever, but I still think the mr2 offers a whiff of the exotic and is just a nice thing to pilot. No chance will we ever see anything mid-engined from a mainstream manufacturer again.

If I were buying one now, I'd probably avoid the complexity of the turbos (most will have had a hard life) and find a nice NA. I believe the holy grail of NA MR2's a "Beams"? engine with around 200 bhp I seem to recall.

Had a red one with white wheels, proper cheesy spec, about the only time playing Wham with the roof off made sense. Absolutely loved it and there's just something special about pop up headlights that I started to miss the moment I sold it. The boot is surprisingly big too.

Lovely example in the advert but even today 10k feels a bit strong.

I like them, but remember when you could get that all for less than £1k. And it doesn't feel like that long ago!

I had one, 'L' plate so '94 was it?

White, T-bar with a CD player.

Loved it - but but but, steering was very dead which was a real let down

When did these become a £10k car, does not seem that long ago that they were £2k or less.

Sitting on Goodyear EAGLE F1 GSD 2's which are going to be anywhere from 15 to over 20 years old, surely needs new tyres, especially for that price.
