Hooking up a laptop to the ECU

If I get my hands on a cable and software i assume it is possible to hook up my own laptop for fault finding and diagnosis???

Anyone done this? What kind of costs would be involved? Is there really any benefit?

You need something called a 'box of tricks'. I know a couple of people who have them, one being Mark Adams of course. It is probably no coincidence that the people I know who have these are engine management specialists, as far as I know these things are not readily available. Mark Adams was talking at one point about selling a little black box just to display fault codes and sensor readings, if he ever went ahead with this I think they'd sell like hot cakes and do pretty much what you're after.

I guess you'd only benefit if you knew how to fix whatever faults show up...

The ECU has a 'Rover special' language of its own and they are still not willing to release the details.

Mark Adams has a lot of experience with these ECUs and I think has some details regarding Rover protocols for the ECU.

I have a Rover ECU fault code reader which I hire out at £10 per week. You are welcome to try this if you want.
