I’m from a younger generation and apparently I am weird for not liking phone calls/ not opening the door when I am not expecting someone. I’m currently selling something and never answer the phone to people ringing me about it and instead I text them back saying I missed their call. Why can’t people just text?

I never answer unsolicited phone calls, even from friends and family (I’m nearly 20, so no wife and kids) unless its from my parents and even then after much hesitation. But I’ll be more than happy to text them. This annoys my parents who hate texting. And i’m not an antisocial grump because I like to talk in person!

And then when it comes to in person. If anyone knocks on my door they don’t get a response and I only open it if I absolutely have to / I am expecting something. The few times I open the door, usually when i haven’t curtain twitched/stalked them through my video doorbell, its usually some pathetic oaf trying to sell me something.

It’s gotten to the point where I have stuck on stickers on my door saying no cold calls/Neighourhood watch etc

I do have a diagnosed anxiety condition, but I am wondering now that maybe I just happen to have a want to ignore all other humans outside my circle of friends and family, like a sort of uncontacted tribesperson.

Am I strange?

My wife (36) will literally do anything to avoid answering her mobile, the panic that goes on when it rings is bizzare.

It’s frustrating as she is very bright and shouldn’t be shy

Yes, very, but having a mild mental health issue makes you windswept
and interesting which prompted you
to write this thread in order to seek attention.

Me myself am grappling with adopting a slight case of
Tourettes [ GUSSET], a sort of Tourettes-ette if you will.
{ARSE} Nothing too gross that will get me thrown out M&S Food Hall,
[MOIST] just a few tics and grunts to frighten kids.
Such fun.

That wasn’t my intention, more so a light hearted thread, but thanks for your input.

You sound thoroughly weird smile... but that's not how I understand the term "curtain twitcher". Isn't a curtain twitcher someone who's constantly watching what their neighbours are doing in the hope of finding something to complain about?

No, just shy and cautious

People are strange when you're a stranger
Faces look ugly when you're alone
Women seem wicked when you're unwanted
Streets are uneven when you're down

You’re not as strange as this guy.

I would say you're mostly fine - except for the "selling something" bit.

If I see something for sale that interests me, the first thing I do is pick up the phone. You can't get any impression from anyone via text - a conversation is much better - and it helps me to filter out people I don't want/don't trust to buy from.

I also absolutely hate people ringing me, even at work. If I don't recognise the number and/or I'm not expecting it then there's no chance I will answer it. The way I look at it, if it's important, they'll leave a message. The whole concept that some stranger can interrupt whatever it is you're doing at any time I find highly annoying and intrusive.

Same with knocks at the door.

I am weird though biggrin

I'm an introvert. I've never been diagnosed with anything though I do have anxiety and I'm probably on "the spectrum" to some extent. I despise phone calls. I don't know why. I'd much rather text or have a video call where you can see the person you're talking to. I'm happy enough talking face-to-face, though I can only take so much human interaction before I need to be on my own to recharge. Also, group socialising really doesn't work for me. I just end up being talked over by everyone else and fade into the background.

Also, this is exactly me...

100% the same. If the number isn't in my address book or its witheld I don't answer, very often there is no message so it can't have been important. Same with the door, I used to answer the door a lot to the point that 90% of the time it was to take a parcel in for a neighbour FFS! And if it wasn't for that then it would be do I want Virgin media cable or would I like to make a monthly donation to.... agghh just fk off the lot of you!

Well then I have an admission to make. I am also a curtain twitcher, but then usually I don’t complain as people down here seem to be very normal. I don’t think I have spoken to my neighbours more than twice in the 10 years I have lived here, but then its a mutual thing - they are just like me.

I developed a fear of answering the phone, shortly after I sold my business (which required it fixed to my ear).
I now work in tele sales!

I am over it now.

I always answer my phone, if its an idiot trying to sell me something, I just put it down.

If I'm selling stuff, I would rather have a call and answer questions, especially if they start reeming off paragraphs or ask a ton of question, I can't be arsed typing or interpreting their message.

If I'm buying, I'll start with a text, then if I'm serious, follow up with a call. A text is good to ask for an extra pic or quick question. Any detail needs a call. I bought my last motorcycle via video call, recorded the exchange, paid the cash (12k) then arranged pick up. Yep, 12k to a stranger I'd never met in person. I wouldn't do that by text.

All work calls are 80% inter communicator first, then a call. "You got a sec for a call" is mostly through the computer with a headset, but communication is much better by talking.

You just need to pick up the phone and start getting used to it, you've conditioned yourself to texts which is hampering your communication skills.

Strange is just relative. Some of your behaviour might be classed as a bit illogical though...

I get not taking unsolicited phone calls, even from friends and family. If her phone goes my wife will usually drop what she's doing and rush to answer, and then complain afterwards about the interruption wobble Whereas I'll ignore anything I don't recognise, and even if I do recognise the number won't always answer if I'm busy.

But if you advertise something and include your phone number then you are literally inviting a call. Not everyone wants to text, so I'd suggest maybe be a bit more open to taking these calls?

As for answering the door, yes it's annoying if it's some cold calling tosser, but 9 times out of 10 it's something for you. Parcel, meter reading, neighbour, someone pointing out your house is on fire, etc etc. Do you really get that many people at the door?

Many people suffer from that kind of anxiety. I suppose its worth asking yourself what you're worried about. The more you face these things, they become less of an issue every time.

I mean, it could be an emergency and for that reason I'll always answer. If its sales i'll ask them to take me off their call list. I think you're right to approach any unknown number with some amount of suspicion as there are a lot of scams at the moment.
