Freshening up a wax jacket ?

The outer is pristine, doesn’t need a rewax, it’s the inside. It’s a biker jacket which I took with me on a riding holiday thinking the weather would be cooler…. It’s not stinky but it’s not fresh either.

I’ve googled, but the guidance is either for the outer only or is weird, saying to spray diluted vodka on it then rub with vanilla pods…

Any country types in with more sensible suggestions?

Firstly I would try hanging it up on all washing line on a dry windy day.

If that doesn't work try some Febreze or make up your own with fabric conditioner diluted 20% with water in a spray bottle.

The vodka kind of makes sense - your sweat has created a micro-environment for biologicals, and the alcohol kills biologicals. The vanilla is for smelling nice, but that's viciously expensive now, so replace with Febreze and a washing line.

Is there any reason you couldn't open it up on the carpet and use a carpet shampooer with the small upholstery attachment on the inside?

I think I'd remove any armour, turn the whole thing inside out, and give it a decent wash down with a wet/damp soapy cloth. Then maybe some fabreze for longer-lasting smell. Since it's inside out the soap won't remove any wax, but should still freshen it up.

If you can get hold of one of those car detailing or dog urine enzyme fabric cleaners, that stuff tends to do the trick even on the mankiest of fabrics.

I use Autosmart Biobrisk but I’m sure others are available and equally good.

Barbour say to hand wash in cool water using non detergent soap - no idea what that is - never use fabric conditioners.

Chuck it in the washing machine and re-wax it. It's pretty simple. Did 3 of our Barbours last year. Didn't take long and they all look like new.

Stick the tin of wax in a saucepan of hot water. Wait for it to melt and then just sponge it on. Leave to dry and presto. New jacket.

This has been discussed before. Don't put in in a machine, there's another layer of wax on the inside of the lining, facing the inside of the outer layer the jacket which stops the outer wax from getting through when you reproof it. At least, Barbours do.

OK about cleaning the inside. Turn the jacket inside out, put it in a bath of cold water without detergent, soak it overnight, agitate the lining by scrubbing it gently with a softish brush.

I use the same technique on the outside but with a stiffer brush seeing as its thornproof. Rinse, let it drip dry. This is what Barbour recommend for cleaning without proofing.

I’m not going to reproof it as it doesn’t need it, it’s barely 6mths old. I’ll reverse it and do as described above.
