Is the whole system totally useless.
My Mother took me to our local Nat West in the 60s to open my account and I have been with them ever since.
I had to transfer a reasonable chunk to HMRC.
Too much for online banking.
Tried telephone banking, same answer.
Had to go in to a branch, but they have closed them all because no one goes in and you can do it all on line.
10 people ahead of me, only 2 staff in the whole place. Wait 10 minutes to get to the front. Cant do it at the counter so she had to close her point and take me to a desk. Why I have no idea.
Took 20 minutes and then it had to be sanctioned by the other member of staff.
They charge £23 for the privilege.
They ask me if I have a bill, no I have to calculate what I owe and pay it. Computer says no, you must have a demand.
They ask me if it might be a scam. She did not see the humour when I said the UK Government were certainly thieving buffoons but not criminals.
You can not pay by cheque as that is old fashioned, you cant pay by card because of the charges. You cant pay by online because it might be a scam and you cant go in to a branch because they have all closed.
No wonder the economy is fked.

Sympathies - am sure the Bank was at pains to point out this is all for your protection although the HMRC scams are apparently widespread. In reality they are protecting themselves.
I had to get some cash out the other day to pay for some garden sculptures ( the artist / blacksmith has no bank account ) - I reckon I was “ interviewed “ for 15 minutes answering questions - when she asked was anyone waiting for me outside I wisely answered no thinking yes ( my wife ) would result in further delays in getting MY cash.
To be fair when I complained subsequently to my private bank manager he did say she had been over the top.

In fairness to the banks, they’re dammed if they do, dammed if they don’t.

Scammers are prolific and taking big £ out of peoples bank accounts, and they get huge fines for money laundering.

Personally I’ve never had any issue at all transferring significant sums to HMRC via Nat West.

I have had my account hacked / card cloned 3 times over the last 10 years and lost £28k from my accounts. Nat West refunded the lot, so I personally can’t blame them for making extra checks.

You can pay via Debit Card on the HMRC website (it's only Credit Card that has charges). First Direct also have HMRC set up as one of the default payees so you can pay them via Faster payments (also free).

I'd suggets moving to First Direct. I've been with them for nearly 30 years. they're not as good as they used to be but still pretty good.

As Countdown said, First Direct are the best of a grotty bunch by some margin. Going downhill a bit, but still the best.

Having spent a little time trying to decipher the point, I suspect it comes down to the fact that, given the amount you need to transfer to HMRC was 'a reasonable chunk', ie over the daily limit of online banking, the bank needed to provide something a little more tailor-made, ie it involved someone doing something specifically for you, rather than a system doing it all fully automated.

If that's the case, the £23 charge isn't in the slightest unreasonable. It's a service the bank provide and you need to pay for it. You could've done a series of daily limit online transfers, but didn't.

I know the banks, rightly, get a hard time of it when it comes to OD charges, £35 per letter, etc, etc, but I don't see this instance as something to criticise the bank for. Just my opinion.

Yes; I've moved several tens of Ks using FD just by ringing them up.

I opened a Nat West business account when I first started trading. Not long afterwards I went in to take out £30 cash - they wanted to charge me £5. I walked out and moved my account elsewhere.

Change bank or make several payments over a number of days.

I assume this wasn't for personal tax then?
I get a letter detailing the amount I owe and the date it needs to be paid.

Sounds like the OP is annoying his bank by using a personal account for business?

The daily payment limit is £20k, above that you have to pay for CHAPS.

Last time I was moving such sums of money, I found Investec to be very good.
I think there was still a fee, but at least they paid a decent rate of interest.

Top tip, if your limit is £20k, don't pay £20k to the revenue than get surprised when your direct debit doesn't go out that day!

Oh it is so rewarding that most posters on Piston Heads automatically jump to the conclusion that the OP is lying cheating or a troll.
No it is not a business transaction, some private individuals do have to give HMRC painful amounts from time to time.
The fact that Natwest were able to put in the correct sort code and account number from me just putting HMRC and the department means they should know it is not a scam or money laundering.
As to service if it had been below their limit then I could have done it in 20 seconds on my phone so all they had to do was enter the amount and allow it.
Yes I have learnt that there is a premier account. When they got rid of their Gold account perhaps they might have kept a list of those customers and invited them across.
But when I come to pay for either of the 2 cars I have been waiting over a year for they will both be over that limit.
Come on banking system catch up.
Yes they have not closed all their branches, I exaggerated, the 2 within 2 miles of me have been closed, the nearest only opens between 10 and 2 and is 8 miles away, the next is 16 miles in the opposite direction.

Don't bother OP with the private service. Normal retail channel is just as good.
I've had them ring me up. Had the consult (2nd time lucky since first time they never rang). They can't offer anything of value, but to your point there's a cost to it.
Even a tax accountant is beyond them.

Just don't bother. If you have serious powder to manage:
1) Bank like retail.
2) Have a family office.

I was trying to but a car recently, was £70k or thereabouts. Could I have had PCP, HP, other finance and walked away with the car in minutes, yes. Took hours of calls and call backs to actually but it with the money in my bank account lol.
