This is a different one for me, I did used to own a Mk4 V5 and also a MK4 1.8T GTi, but that was many moons ago and I’ve had some decent cars since, including, BMW 645ci, E46 M3, and my recently sold BMW F30 330d.

I was looking for a Jaguar X150 XKR, but after finding one absolutely perfect example amongst a sea of rubbish I viewed, I realised I just didn’t love it, so I had a rethink.

My want of a ULEZ friendly car and fun, quick, auto (left knee ruined) and the worlds impending financial doom over the next year made me look for something I could tinker with but wouldn’t cost me the earth…
That’s when I found this 2010 Golf MKVI GTi with its 2.0L turbo TSi engine.

It’s a 69k, absolutely immaculate Jap import, running 210 bhp, in candy white with 18” Monza alloys, DCC suspension and tartan throwback interior. I paid £9000.

Some photos…

Sadly after 8 superb days enjoying a hot hatch again, I broke down, misfire cylinder 2.
After swapping coil packs from 2 to 3, the fault disappeared, but I’ve ordered 4 x Audi R8 coil packs and 4 x new spark plugs as preventative maintenance.

The car is also due for Stage 1 remap (approx 260 bhp) and DSG gear box map on Thursday the 1st of September, so I need it in top shape.

This car also has Xenon headlights, LED rear lights, a rear badge mounted reverse camera which I have to try and repair, flappy paddles, flat bottomed steering wheel and dual exit exhaust.

I have a set of 25mm lowering springs to go on, just to lose a bit of height and body roll, I won’t be slamming this!

That’s a lovely example. Looking at these I kinda miss my old mk6 a bit

If you haven’t already done it make sure it’s got the latest timing chain tensioner fitted

Looks in very good condition for age!

I keep seeing these European Jap imports. What's the score with them? Are they undersealed from factory or is it a case of getting protection on asap?

What about spec on the JDM models? is there anything that isn't compatible with Europe?

Sorry for the questions but always remember jap imports used to be in far better condition than the usual UK based jap stuff. Opens up the market quite considerably if that's still the case

Very nice, I had a 3 door DSG candy white in 2012 as a company car. I think it felt much quicker than 207 bhp...

Did you take the roof spoiler extension off? Thought it looked good.

Timing chain is on my mind, I have no info on it being done so it’s right up there on my list.

I thought the same about all that having owned Jap import Imprezas and a Skyline.
It appears to have been undersealed at some point, but It’s in for MOT soon so I’ll see it properly on the ramp.
The specs are supposed to be higher than euro versions, but personally I feel it’s missing some basics like parking sensors, but has the adaptive suspension.

I added the spoiler extension and it’s still on the car, I really like it.
This feels quick in the twisties, but not so much in a straight line, the remap will help that out… except my next update isn’t 100% positive!

So my bits arrived today, but before fitting I started the car, plumes of fuel smoke, a shaking car but no fault codes.

I replaced 4 x spark plugs and 4 x coil packs, no change.

The AA came out and couldn’t diagnose accurately, but suspect a stuck open injector, so it’s been towed to a local garage where it’ll live temporarily until they have time to look at it.

I’d be annoyed if I paid 9k for a car I can’t rely on too not break down

That’s a lovely Mk6 GTi, I think they’ve aged really well and yours looks like a great example.

Keep the thread updated please cool

VW were on a roll with their styling and packaging during this era. I hope your woes are sorted soon, but I'd not be put off some early hiccups on a car of 12 years age. Hopefully it's something that's easily sorted so that you can get on with enjoying what looks otherwise like a good find. You'd need to spend an awful lot on it before its costs overtook the depreciation on a newer car. smile

I really like the look of the Mk6 cars and wish you the best with getting yours sorted.

I'd certainly be interested in a 5 door as a family car in the future.

If you turn it over with the spark plugs removed, does it shoot fuel out through the spark plug hole?

Teething issues, it doesn’t particularly phase me, it happens.

This is so immaculate that I’m prepared to do what’s required to make it even better.

Exactly that. I was going to do these bits anyhow, I just got forced into doing them sooner.

Thank you. I’m going to try to toughen it up a touch, but I won’t be diverting too far away from its original clean looks.

Cylinder 4 injector was running on ignition and filling the bore.
I didn’t try that which you mentioned but the plug for no.4 was wet, 1,2,3 dry, and when I removed the plug on no.4 it was smoking white fuel smoke where none of the others did.

So the garage have come back to me, no.4 injector is stuck open.
I had a choice of 1 new OEM VW injector replaced, plus decoke of intake, plus new oil and filter at £500, or all 4 for £1200.

After spitting out my Cornflakes I’ve gone for all 4 to hopefully future proof the car, adding to the 4 x R8 coilpacks and 4 x spark plugs.
