NIP for a car i sold 3 years ago!

Hello folks

Sold my old Honda Accord back in December 2019. I had owned it for 5 years and had it on a private plate, so have never driven it on the 08 plate it's on now/ was from new.

I've had a NIP today from west mids because it was doing 46 in a 30. I'll obviously write back to them and tell them i sold it, but the form asks me to name the buyer. Which of course, 3 years ago i've no clue! I'm not a numpty, so i did of course at the time complete the transfer of ownership inline with the DVLA.

I recall i sold it to a couple of Birmingham based init bruv's and i think it went "to trade" although i can't be sure.

So, what does one do with west mids? and how do i update the DVLA? I guess i'm potentially being spotted for all manner driving offences if this cars somehow still registered in my name all this time later?!

Unfortunately can't find it. I do have the conf i took my Private plate off. And i have just found the AA receipt i made them sign with name and date, but no address

Does the DVLA vehicle check show last reg doc issue date?

When I bought the Daihatsu Shed, I made the mistake of not re-registering it in my name (first used car for years etc). I MOTed, insured and taxed it, but did not commit any motoring transgressions.

So if the buyer from 3 years ago did the same, then a NIP would fall to the last registered keeper?

It's the seller that registers it with the DVLA to put it in the buyers name

The tax is showing as expired in April this year, so obviously it must've been taxed prior to that. You didn't tax it so there must be registered keeper out there somewhere..

If a car is sold to in trade or indeed sold to any trader as a trade sale the traders details don't show up on PNC, and PNC will show the OP as previous keeper with a seperate in trade marker added, as such the last registered keeper on PNC assuming it hasn't been registered to anyone since will be the OP.

I had something similar a few years ago when I sold an old C180 Mercedes to someone who bought scrap cars as a trade sale, a few weeks later I got an NIP through from Lancashire Police as the car was speeding in Blackburn (I live no where near and have no desire to go there ever).

I sent it back with a covering note detailing the disposal of the car and heard nothing since.

Could that be the case even though it's been taxed in the meantime?


I was woken late at night by police after an ex-neighbour's car had been "seen". He'd gone back to the US and sold his car at auction a few weeks before.

The police checked the address and insisted it was correct at my address - yet he'd lived across the road from me, and owned the car for several years. If the house number had always been mine then I would have got the tax reminders.

A similar thing happened to me hundreds of years ago: my Ford Mondeo was taken in part-ex by a back street dealer against another motor and then, a few days later, a notice to keeper for a speeding ticket obtained by the Mondeo post-sale came through the post. I simply ticked the box to say that I was no longer the keeper and heard nothing further. It's not worth over-thinking.

So who gets the tax reminders etc whilst it's "in trade"? They go to the trader? If so, why hasn't this NIP?

I believe whilst it's "In trade" there will be no VEL due because they would assume that it is used on trade plates until a new registered keeper takes ownership and registers the car. (I could be wrong). Ultimately a legitimate dealer will not tax every car they are selling because if the car goes on the road it "should" be on trade plates which the dealer pays an annual sum to the DVLA for.

I know that now. I taxed the car online just before I collected it, but the seller gave me the whole V5C. I just taxed it with the V5C for a few years before realising - did wonder why I got no reminders!
