I bought a car a while ago that already had a private plate. I now want to scrap this car but there may be some value in the plate. However if i sell the plate, I wouldn't have any plates at all for it?

I've never bought/sold a private plate so not sure if there is a way to sell the plate and immediately scrap the car without getting the car registered on a new plate?

Read this

In short, firstly put the plate on retention, costs £80

The vehicle will then be issued a new plate by the DVLA (generally the original plate it was first registered with)

Get some new plates made up with the new registration on it

And then sell the plate that you have put on retention

Ah thank you, I had read that already but your reply has clarified the easiest route for me to do this.

Many thanks

As above. Put the plate on retention (cost £80). As part of that process DVLA will assign a new reg to the car.

Seems it isn't worth the hassle as the plate seems to barely be worth 150. Was expecting more like 300 didn't realise theyre mostly worthless unless they're short / make a funny word
