Trying to get a quote so i can drive a family members new pickup and its coming in at nearly a grand!! as is them adding me as a named driver.

The value is 35k ish and my usage was put in at 1000m pa for social only.

My car insurance, on some higher value (than the pickup)powerful cars is less than third of this.

Is this just a thing as seems completely odd to me that i would pay less for more miles in far more expensive and 'dangerous' vehicles to what i would in a pickup truck. Or am i being dumb somehow...

Good timing,

I bought a transporter last week as our family car, mine is classed as a commercial vehicle and as such couldn't use the comparisons sites as much, Ageus Van insurance is who I have gone with and it was the same price as the mini cooper S I had insured a few years ago.

my quote for Mid September start was £341, I needed it quicker and they loaded it a bit but still about £400.

Issue I had is that I wanted "business insurance" for travelling for work, they would only cover "business" on a van as carrying goods, just left it as commuting.

Commercials are more expensive to insure in general. My Fiesta Van costs about three times what the otherwise identical spec Fiesta car costs to insure.

Perhaps because vans are broken into more often... maybe because they're sometimes driven in a less careful manner than if it was the driver's own car. These are just my speculations.

Yep, my 2018 transit custom is on a multicar with my Mclaren.

The break down is 800 for the van and 400 for the car.

cheers all. seems its thing, apart from Klippie whos seems to have beat the system as that seems dirt cheap especially with only 2 years NCB.

Going to buck the trend, my van is just £20 a year more than my car, different insurers too, not multicar

My Vito sport x with the 3 litre diesel lump is surprisingly affordable to insure. About £250 in the wife’s name with me as named driver.

Vans usually dearer. This is why along with no VAT that many small traders are buying used estate cars or older 4x4s. Nicer for the family at weekend too if kept tidy.

I have a Renault Trafic, a Jaguar XJ, a V8 Jeep Grand Cherokee and a Citroen C5.

The van costs more to insure than the three cars combined.

Bloody hell ! I’m paying more than that a month for my Trafic. Who’s that price with, as my renewal is due in November?

My Transporter for my wife and I with A Plan is £650ish, no multicar and I’m not allowed to drive any other vehicles on this policy.

Aren't the key questions what are you doing in it, and where? I should imagine a van being used for pleasure use because you're renovating your own house in the Highlands of Scotland is a bit different to a van being used by a courier in Central London.
