Dealer hasnt taxed the car despite saying they will

Currently on hold with the DVLA about this situation as I write this. This morning I traded in my car for an MX 5, I made all the payments to them etc. They said as they do not have a copy of a V5C currently on hand they will tax the car for me and the new owners slip should come through in roughly a weeks time. I got home and have just gone and checked to see if the car i bought is taxed and it isnt, after ringing the dealership multiple times they picked up and said they will email me the invoice (roughly at 17:15 when i rang them). Its been an hour they havent sent me anything and now that makes me worried that they wont even send me the v5c. Just want some quick advice on what you guys think is going on because it just seems a bit dodgy right now.*

The V5C had been 'mislaid' by the dealer so they assured me that they would sort it with the DVLA.

I'm still waiting for the V5C from the DVLA. So I called them & was advised that I am not the registered keeper!!!

DVLA will not divulge any details, which I understand, so where do I stand legally?

Car is taxed & insured. Just not registered in my name.

Sometimes when I've taxed a car it can take a day or two to show online.

Ill be checking tomorrow if it has come through, but if its not showing up on the DVLA website then doesnt that mean if police run a check then it will say its untaxed for them also?

Is there any chance i could check who the car is registered, because should it not just be registered on the dealers name?

The car can't be taxed as you don't have the v5c to do so. You need the document reference number to tax a car. Tax used to be transferable but stopped a few years ago now..

My car is taxed - was sorted by the dealer using a company called Bumper.

I pay them monthly. Car tax checker confirms fully taxed.

Also I was stopped on the M5 a few days by a Motorway Patrol car because of a problem with the brake lights- as in they were permanently 'on'.

All my details were checked whilst I was sat in the back of a very comfortable Police car!!!!.

I'm certain that if the car wasn't taxed it would have been seized.

They have likely taxed it at the post office on a V62 - https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/applica...

Which is the normal practice when a V5 is mislaid.

IIRC it takes a day or so for the tax to show online when this method is used, but they should be able to show a receipt for the transaction.

The DVLA website sometimes isn't instant.

We bought a car in 2018 (so under the new system where you can't transfer tax) - paid, got a receipt, and the print out from the DVLA system that the tax was paid (then left this at home)

Next day got pulled over - as the car was showing as not taxed or insured, I could show proof of insurance by logging in to my account - but it did show as not taxed. Passed the police attitude test as they let us go on the premise we checked, and sorted it if there was a problem. Got home and checked the receipt - and all looked ok, so figured it took a while to update (the police did mention this could happen) - 24 hours later all was good.

Is this a dealer? No way I'd pay for a car without at least the new keeper's slip. Tax isn't transferable these days. As soon as the DVLA receives a change of keeper notification they will refund the seller any whole months of tax remaining, and it becomes the buyer's responsibility to tax.

yes this is a dealer, they said as they dont have the v5c on hand they will send me that through post and theyll tax it for the month. But the fact they havent taxed is properly dodgey now.

Last used car I bought, the dealer sat with me whilst I taxed it, jointly checked the V5 and sorted that too. Takes 2 minutes, that was their standard procedure, then you can drive away.

Got an approved used car from a franchised dealer 3 months ago, it was taxed by the dealer on the day of handover (charged to my card, listed as taxed), but no V5 tear-off slip as it's "all electronic now". I've nipped the dealers head a few times now about no V5 being received, DVLA delays & what not have been cited.

Vchecked the car a few days ago & the last change of keeper was 2 years ago, since confirmed this with DVLA. So without a tear off slip I need to pony up £25 for a replacement V5 via a V62 I think, only thing is I don't know who the registered keeper is / or if it even matters with a V62?

I would have thought that the change of keeper would have been done at the same point as the vehicle was taxed, but it appears not - lesson learned, insist on the tear-off!

Surely what should happen is you tax it there and then ("all electronically") using the details on the tear off strip? And then take that bit with you.

Dealer did it, I only completed card details. After an early AM start & 4 hour drive I wasn't sharp enough to aks for the tear-off, realised my mistake on the way home & assumed that there wouldn't be any shenanigans from an established premium-ish franchise......

So I bought a car in May. The dealership delivered from Surrey to my door. They had all the documentation, gave me an invoice, history/paperwork and the new keepers supplement. Despite them knowing it could all be done online. They kept the v5, took it back with them, along with my name/address to do it at the office. Not sure why - wasn't that fussed - new car day!

Anyway. That was May. I messaged them (dealer) 6-7 weeks later as i had not received a new keepers supplement. They had sent it off literally that afternoon - sent me the postage receipt from the local post office (nice of him). Rang the DVLA - they had no idea. They said give it 2 weeks and if you don't receive a new registration document to pay the £25 and do it that way.

3 weeks went by and it arrived (i was just lazy as it was insured and taxed and had the new keepers).

Anyway moral of the story DVLA seem to have about a 10 week backlog at the moment based on how long it took. So it could very well be with them and they just are sat on it under a pile of docs in an in-tray.

For peace of mind though don't disagree it would be worth it to me for the £25.

Just bought a new car but i had to go to the post office for the tax because of the change of ownership.That said all i had to do was pay the at the post office give them one page of the V5 as the dealer had already notified DVLA of the change of ownership(its 7 years since i bought a car oddly from the same dealer and didn't realize the process had changed)Even the refund of the remaining road tax on the old car was handled automatically.
