I've actually had this a year nearly, but thought i'd share on here.

Short story....my in-laws bought a Renault Megane convertible back in the summer of 2000 (incidentally, they still own this, garaged entire life on 70k!) however, the day of collecting that car, father-in-law's mate 'Bob' comes round to have a nose.

In true Bob fashion, he didn't want to be 'beat' by his mate so pops out to the VW garage on the way home and orders a little black Polo GTi.

It was a few weeks before it arrived and I was again at the in-laws when Bob comes round to show off his new set of wheels. Obviously as a bit of a car enthusiast (and being 20 years old) the Polo GTi was infinitely cooler than the silver Megane and I laugh and say to father-in-law, "this is what you should have bought" and jokingly say to Bob "i'll buy that off you when you sell it".

Fast forward 21 years >>>

FIL calls me out of the blue "Bob's selling his Polo, do you want it?"

Now, I'm stuck with a Golf R and a VW Camper on the drive, but fancied a runabout and wife said "haven't you wanted that for ages?" anyway, we agree I can take look, so I take a drive with FIL 30 mins up the road and see the poor little thing sitting there.

"Before I start...how much Bob?"
"give me a grand and I'll be happy, it's just passed it's MOT"
"deal"

I really didn't want to haggle as I knew it was worth at least that before I left and took £3k with me just in case lol!

<cardoesnotstart>

After a bit of faffing about, we got it started and I drove it home with a big smile on my face, it's not fast, but it's fun.

Anyway, the car....
2000 Polo GTi 6n2 a full 125bhp.
48,000 miles (currently.....just done a road trip to Wales chasing my friends in M3's and VX220s etc lol!)
FSH and the initial bill of sale still in there £12,995!

It needed a bit of love and attention on the cosmetic side, but wanted for nothing mechanically, just been sitting around too long as Bob worked abroad for long periods of time. I got the wheels refurbished and got it polished, otherwise, it's standard and runs like a dream.

Nice. Guess thats the more modern take on the old G40. Whats the engine? Guess it weighs under a tonne? Not really clued up on them

1.6 and 125bhp, it's about 1000kgs I think, it's certainly chuckable on slim tyres!

Oh, it's definitely punchier above 4k and comes alives (as much as 125bhp does come alive laugh), have to really work it hard to make it go and keep up with things taking it easy lol!

Here’s our one…
Had this car for 8 years to replace our original one we bought new in 2000. My partners car , still won’t sell it as she loves it to bits. Our first one was hard worked and was only sold (at 130k) as it was showing signs of surface corrosion. This one belonged to a pensioner and it had only done 19k when we got it. Now just doing 3-4k per year as we’re retired and car has very gentle life. Just turned 60k last week and drives perfectly. General maint , new discs, cam belt , ac compressor and clutch fork pivot is all it’s needed. A word of warning ..if the clutch peddle feels sticky lubricate the bush for fork pivot on top of bellhousing. Ours was stiff for a couple of years…which I ignored…turns out the bush was so seized the lever sheared off the pivot pin necessitating box removal to replace it . Have heard it’s not uncommon. Getting rare , especially good original ones..think around 7-800 left of original 2500 made .. good luck with it.

Lovely car OP - very smart - shame it wasn't out for longer before the bug-eyed Polo was launched, but it was "only" a facelift wasn't it?

I had this shape Polo as my first car - albeit a 1.0E - Diamond black with.... nothing else! Oh, single CD.

Cheers for the comments, it's really a cracking little car, obviously when you've got 400bhp in your other car, it would be easy to dismiss this one, but I really enjoy it still.

Forgot to mention it's got Climate control and a 6 disc changer in the boot! Retro cool, my father-in-law dug out a load of cassettes for me to listen to on my recent road trip too hehe

I've got a few little bits I want to do, but it'll remain standard and well looked after as I'm a bit of a perfectionist, but one with more mileage sold at auction last week for over £6k....it's already been a good investment.

If you come across one, they're worth a look.

Would still happily swap for a Clio 172 (my fave car) but as it stands, it's staying and I have a son who will be 17 at Xmas who's eyeing it up as his first car! #dreamer

Nice - owned two of these before and loved the build quality and way they drove. Wasn't too keen on the way the gearboxes lunched themselves regularly though (two rebuilds done on one and one on the other).

Would definitely have another but the days are gone (apart from you!) where you could pick one up for peanuts and stuff like Mini R53s (which I've also had two of) offer far more performance for far less money. Would love to try a Lupo GTI which has the same engine but I think a slightly better gearbox...

Always wanted one of these when I was younger. I always liked the shape and they weren't that popular which was part of the appeal. Still think they look great.

Had this in 2011, the amount of oil I had to put in was unbelievable.

My Mum bought one of these new when they came out and I ended up buying it off her some 15 years after that, kept it for a few years myself. Fond memories of it since it was a constant in my life for a long time, can't say it was particularly engaging to drive though.
