Becoming a franchisee?

Anyone had any experience or knows anyone that has become a franchisee in the fast food industry?

Is it worth it? Are the returns better elsewhere?

Subway seems like it’s on its arse. I’d be very careful there.

I once had a very brief look at having a Mcdonalds restaurant but after talking to a restaurant owner decided it wasn’t for me.

They tend to give new franchises to existing owners,the bloke I spoke to had 10 restaurants and was always thinking of more.
The capital outlay is alot,alot more than I was willing to put up anyway.

A friend is on the management team for one owner with 10 restaurants. I asked him if he had considered getting his own but he said the 24hr business wasn't for him, he liked to be able to switch off and as an owner you can never do that completely.

Licence to print over the COVID pandemic and it hasn't dropped much. Mega sums of money involved in new restaurants too (millions).

They could well be but that’s probably due to over expansion if true.

I know a couple of people who have/had subway franchises and they didn’t earn much at all. When they wanted to exit they had to pretty much give the business away.

I appreciate it’s probably location dependant but I’d be very careful.

Happy to hear of some success stories if anyone has any.

Needs to be near a school imo for the easy pickings from kids with money to burn

Yes, Simon was an early adopter and got out at the right time after a successful period.
