Private Plate transfer question

Purchased a car a few weeks ago and was wanting to keep the private plate from the trade in. Was sitting with the dealer (Arnold Clark) and we went through the 'retain plate' section but it would not let us do it online. I paid the dealer 80 quid and he was going to give the info to their admin place to get it sorted out. I can now see that my trade in has the old plate back on it and when I search for my private plate on the DVLA the number cannot be found so I take it that the plate was now taken off.

I got the log book in this morning for the new car and thought I could now transfer my private plate to it using the original V750 certificate of entitlement but is not letting my assign it online. I notice there is a V778 form mentioned. I take it that I now need to wait on that form to arrive before I can assign the plate to the new car? Must have a different reference number or something compared to my original cert of entitlement?

I expect the reference numbers have changed. Just taken the plate off my bike to sell it. The v5 came back a few days before the new retention certificate.

Yes, each time a new retention certificate is issued it is assigned a new reference number and the previous one becomes null and void.

It might have got held up little with the Royal Mail strike earlier in the week. If you got the V5 today, you will more than likely get the retention certificate on Monday or Tuesday.
