My uncle is on the lookout for something he can use to put the dogs in, tip runs and taxing family around. He has around £2-4K and has found a local KIA

Any help or advice would be great.

Road tax £615? A lot for a shed.

Parts are expensive. Have a look under the car - the sills suffer on these.

You'd probably get a decent estate car for that kind of money that's cheaper on tax too. I'd vote for an E Class personally.

I went to Sedona (the place in USA) without knowing anything about it. I expected it to be as ugly as the car which had taken its name.

Nothing prepared me for how beautiful the place was. The car on the other hand.......

I had a new '06' one

It was a dog, slow, averaged about 21mpg and had such serious electrical issues that Kia bought it back off me !

If you need an MPV then I'd personally prefer something like a Zafira. Loads of them around, cheap and easily sourced parts and they (in my eyes) look kind of acceptable in and out vs the Sedona which looks absolutely vile from every angle!

If it's anything like my Kia Soul, local motor factors who can usually have oddball parts available same day, couldn't source some bits for my front suspension, had to order them from autodoc, Parts guy mentioned that any parts they could find were way more expensive than the equivalent for his Lexus.

It's a full-size MPV, like a Galaxy or the old Previa, space for 7 adults.

If he needs a car that size, then the suggestions of estates or a Zafira won't be big enough.
If he doesn't, then a smaller car will be nicer to drive and cheaper to run.

In the full size MPV category, I think either a Galaxy, or a Toyota Previa or JDM import Estima/Alphard or Nissan Elgrand.

Note, imports and anything registered before 23 march 2006 escape the top rate road tax.

A couple of observations, if considering one of those Accord estates look for one that's had the clutch done, it's not the price of the part it's the amount of labour it takes to do it. A couple of owners of CR-Vs have posted here on PH with photos. They can look quite nice and shiny on top but can rust around the wheelarchs and cills.

We got our Previa in that price range.
Previa and Sedona drive more like vans.
Older Galaxy drives more car like.
Galaxy is noticeably smaller than a Previa inside (they are shorter); the Sedona, though a touch longer and wider than the Previa has less useful space with all the seats in, partly because the Sedona seats take up more space, but also the Previa sliding doors make for an extremely wide middle row. With the seats out the Sedona has similar space to the Previa.
Some previa parts are expensive and there is not a full range of pattern parts available, rear suspension bushes needed doing for our MOT and were dealer only. Conversely the brakes are a common size and plenty of cheap aftermarket disk/pads about.
Considering the weight of the car (2 tonnes loaded), surprisingly easy on tyres (partly because so slow).
Those old style Sedonas have terrible diesel engines (I think they are pre common rail) that are not particularly economical , the Previa has an economical (we get 50MPG on the motorway at an indicated 70MPH (about 66MPH real according to GPS) with 5 people and luggage) , but not a very powerful engine.
Galaxy has advantage of a six speed box, along with a bit less weight and similar power makes for a much better driving experience.
Galaxys are prone to rust around the sill/wheel arch areas, which is something to watch out for.

He said he may look at a Galaxy. He has also said about something like this:

That Allroad has air suspension, which I think generally on a two grand shed is either already broken, or will break soon, and is typically very pricey to fix. It's the kind of bills that some people on here are prepared to pay to run an old V8 Merc, but probably would be an order of magnitude more than your uncle would be looking to spend on a cheap runaround.

Right okay. Best tell him to leave that. He likes the look of the CR-V he reckons it’s the right size for what he needs. He’s gone off the KIA and the whole MPV idea.
