I've just been looking at ebay coin values, 50 pence, 20 pence, 2 pence etc and I'm staggered how much some are worth. I used the advanced search too to search for sold items.

Is it a scam? Just rooting through my whiskey jar I've found a few grand if prices are correct.

Anyone know about this?

When I look on eBay about supposedly rare valuable coins aren’t having any bids etc.

There’s a good app called Coins UK that you can track coins you have. After having a couple of Kew 50p’s and spending them not knowing the value when I found out any special coins I’d keep in a jar. Apparently I have £107 of coins and values would be £186 if I sold although I suspect taking the time to sell them is not worth the £79 and I should probably just spend them.

With modern coins there are a few that are worth a bit more, Mis mints etc

The hyped up stories you see in the sun where some Sharon sells her thrupenny bits or modern 50p for 5k are I’d imagine where they get a mate to shill bid and it gets out of hand, I don’t imagine that they actually get the cash paid

That said I do look at change and keep special 20 and 50p

I have a mobile phone 20p and a rally car 20p

The only 50p that actually goes for anything is the Kew gardens. Have 3 myself. Should really sell them.

I've got one of those 20p coins that were minted with no date either side.
The mint were buying them back for a premium, so I imagine that would put the price up.

I've got a Kew 50p, and an undated 20p. I had so many 20p coins pass through my hands I must have had more, but didn't realise at the time. A mate has told me that one of the Beatrix Potter 50p coins is worth a bit more, but I don't remember which one. It's a lot of hassle to turn a 50p coin into a few quid, though.

I still tend to keep "special" ones off to one side, though, just a habit.

Does this app recognise the coin based on a photo?

We have a box of coins which have been in the family many years (great grandparents then onto my grandparents, then onto my parents, and now onto us), it has lots of old british ones, and a few roman and greek coins - some of them are not even a proper shape - they are very old. Would be good to know what it all is and if its worth anything but i've no idea where to even start.

D'oh I guess I should have realised that "UK Coins" but still for the British ones can you photograph the coin and it recognises it, or is the app just for documenting what you know you have ?

My original question was because I'd been on ebay sold items and seen loads of 50 pences (Kew, Kitchner etc) had sold for thousands. Guessing there's some kind of scam then.

Sounds like a good way to launder money. Bloke turned up and paid £5000 in cash. Pay that into your bank, any questions there is an ebay record of the sale etc.

I am guessing this is why ebay are asking for ID more regularly now...

Kew 50p's are changing hands for between £80-95 currently, will they increase in value? who knows

They’ve been sat at that price for years.

My concern is where to sell mine. If I do anything that involves sending it anywhere, I expect it's really easy for the recipient to just say they never got it, or it wasn't one, and not pay me. I'm not desperate for £80, but at the moment I'd rather have that than 50p even if it won't change my life - I was more interested in keeping these things at one point, but now I just look at all the stuff I've "collected" and something has to give at some point.

Pop it on eBay, collection only

Write this on a peace of paper with phone / email, which leads to cash in person outside of eBay, so no comeback
