Hi all,

Does anyone have any recommendations for free or very cheap MTD compatible software? Something straightforward with online tutorials would be handy as, at this stage I don't want to get involved with seminars, or consultants. I'm ok with technology like excel, it's the time & money I'm trying to save right now & maybe look at a more sophisticated package, (sage?) 2023/24.

Many thanks, CF

Are you after an accounts package or VAT bridging software? I'm not sure any of the accounts packages will be free but if it's for VAT there are several alternatives.

Not sure I’d want my business data on some free software tbh.

Which accounting package do you use?

Apologies if I'm stating the obvious - you need an approved accounting package which the MTD software would link to HMRC. So if you HAVE an approved software package then the providers normally also have the MTD bit.

The head of the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) has just requested that the whole MTD project be delayed indefinitely.

VAT - sorry should've made that clearer

Currently I do my own VAT returns & my accountant does the rest, so per above, I wasn't clear, it's just the VAT bridging s/w I need at this stage.

Thanks, CF

The way I read that is that she wants the MTD project for Income Tax to be delayed;
have I missed a bit where she refers to MTD for VAT?

Too late for VAT. It's already in place.

The Income Tax part is a year and a half away and virtually nothing is clear about it at the moment. That's why they are asking for a delay until the underlying tax system is simplified.

I've only done one MTD return & I used VitalTax which went ok, although it's cheap but not free.

Another poster pointed me towards a product he wrote which is free but I haven't tried it yet:

100PcVatFreeBridge would be a good fit if you're OK with Excel or can export to CSV data:

As author, I'm obviously biased but plenty of independent reviews on TrustPilot:

I used www.taxoptimiser.co.uk didn't cost much and was very easy to use, just copy the relevant cells into EXCEL and it works it all out for you
