Greetings

Got home to find some "good news" from my mother dearest. She shows me an email she's recieved from Blueyonder (our ISP) stating they're upgrading everyone to a 4mb connection. Great I think, until she says there was an attachment with it. Odd I think.

The attachment is "Blueyonder Connection kit.zip" - buggered if I'm gonna run the .exe inside it.

The email is supposedly from support@blueyonder.co.uk but could be from anywhere I guess.

Just wondering if anyone else has had this or can shed any light on it?

I'm gonna have a look on the Blueyonder newsgroup, perhaps there's some mention of it.

-edit- to add the text from the email...

Not sure why you should need any software to run at a higher speed. My standard 4Meg connection doesn't need anything installing on the computer at all for it to work.

And as one of their helpful technical support staff once told me, all the Install CD has on it is software to change your home page to Blueyonder and install the support tools.

Exactly my point. Just had a look on the newsgroup and it seems I'm not the only one who's had this email.

Support people are onto it - deffo a virus/scam/something.

I have reformatted my machine several times since having Blueyonder and never used the install disc, it's pretty useless unless you have no idea what you're doing (Mum. But she's got a Mac anyway so that's the end of that!).

I'm with Blueyonder and I didn't get this e mail (although I am on 1 meg)so that may have something to do with it. It may be to do with the instant support tool that comes with it, mine hasn't worked for ages.

I seriously doubt they'd send that out as a Zip file. Any speed upgrades can be done from their end anyway (as the 512k - 1 meg was) so there's no need for any executable files on the user's PC.

I haven't received it on my email a/c, yet mother got it twice on hers.

Odd. If any of you get it, just ignore/delete it as it's definatly something dodgy.

A mate of mine ran the .exe mentioned above and his firewall came up with the following

Def dodgy, Blueyonder BB Upgrade does not require any intervention from a user point of view, apart from a possible Modem reboot.
They def would not send an attachment in an e-mail when they have a sparkly website for you to do so from.

Just got an offical E-Mail from Blueyonder..

"Dear Customer,

We’re pleased to tell you that we have upgraded your speed from 1Mb to up to 4Mb.
We have also increased your upstream speed to up to 384k from 128k.

Whatever you do online you can now enjoy doing it even faster with the free extra
speed. So why not use it to download music* or send photos to your friends and
family."

Rigt now I can down grade my connection and save some spondolees! as i don't need 4Mb, 2Mb is more than enough for moia!

I just got one the other week saying they are upgrading me to 10mbs and that the price is coming down.

The down side is the 11mbs wireless network I have is suddenly looking desperately close to being overtaken by by internet acess speed... scary how quick the speed has gone up for domestic home useage.

I thought that was an excellent way to make me happy. And I must admit the service has had 2 outages in 4 years, which I'm pretty impressed at too.

Thats defintely a spam email, they have to do NOTHING your (PC) end from a software point of view to upgrade speed.

Cheers,

JC

Just checked mine, upgraded from 2mb to "up to 10mb". Not got any cheaper though.

Anyone know why it is "up to..." rather than a defined speed?

Will depend on network contention. Or, in plain English, how many of your neighbours are downloading porn via BlueYonder.

I recieve mails purporting to be from BTCONNECT every day. Each tells me I have changed my password, sending too many emails, need to update my account etc. all get binned as they quite patently are attwempts to introduce spyware.

Obviously Blueyonder does not need it, from the looks of all the replies on this thread, but some older broadband modems/router do need upgraded firmware to get higher speeds, such at the one BT used to give out.

I upgraded the firmware at a friends house, who are with BT, after BT sent them an email. My friend then got a faster connection speed. I must say that the email wasn't out of the blue, this was after she spoke to their support dept. (Is that a contradiction in terms?)

editied for bad grammar!
