Looking to take my mother for plane day out. What would be a better place to take her from the above. I am based in Birmingham so I'm guessing Manchester would be a better drive.
If we went to Myrtle Avenue then I would go down early, 6am, is the frequency of flights a lot more than Manchester?

Any advice appreciated.

There should be quite a few of long haul arrivals from 6am onwards at Heathrow, but check the weather forecast for the wind direction. Unless landings are on 27L, then you could be some distance from the action. Not sure about the parking - it's probably on street, but I don't know if it's resident permit only.

An alternative to the pub at Manchester is the Visitor Park - I think you'll be guaranteed to have a clear view of some taxiing reasonably close up. There's a cafe and parking.

More flights and wider variety into Heathrow, but, you'll get much closer at Manchester and the viewing park is great. £12 all day to park, there's a cafe, aviation shop, commentary (but I think it's only weekends that) Concorde and other planes on display and still a very good selection of movements including heavies at Manchester, but you will get some quieter spells, particularly the afternoon.

For reference, the morning Emirates A380 comes into Manchester around 11am and departs at 1pm. The evening one around 6.30-7pm. If on the predominate wind direction it will taxi right past the viewing park extremely close to you after landing or on the way out if the wind is the other way around.

There are also decent other flights/planes into Manchester, including Qatar (777s and 787s), Etihad (787, Virgin (A330), Air Canada/Rouge (767s), Air Transat (767s/A321s), Turkish (Occasionally A330s), Ethopian (787s), Gulf Air (787s) Singapore (A350s), TUI (787s, 767s), Kuwait (A320s now)

Check out Airliners Live on Youtube. Those guys broadcast live every Sunday and Wednesday at MAN from the viewing park to give you an idea of how close the planes taxi.

All good points, but if you don't go to Myrtle Avenue then you do miss out on one of its great treats: rat spotting. Many a quiet moment watching LHR has been enlivened by large, scuttling rodents.
