I usually just play "arcade" style race games but would like to get into racing sims and use a wheel. Has anyone done this and found it better or more fun?

What one could I get without breaking the bank? What features should I be looking for?

Quite literally any wheel is better than no wheel when it comes to things like this, IMHO. If budget is a factor then as long as it's from a solid brand (Logitech or Thrustmaster at that end) then you'll be fine.

When I bought my setup (TM TX wheel) I did so on the basis it wasn't megabucks like a Fanatec, but it was solid and upgradeable. Now I have the Ferrari GT wheel for it, the TH8A shifter and the T3PA pedals and that's more than enough for a mid-range setup. You can still get the TX/T300 unit and I'd highly recommend it, especially with all the add-on bits.

Yes it’s more fun, but it’s a slippery slope!
Good place to start is with a Logitech g series wheel. You can pick them up second hand quite easily or buy new for a reasonable price. They come with pedals and have flappy paddles for gear changes. I started with a g923 (the PlayStation version) and it did me well for a year before I went for a direct drive wheel.

Also think about how your going to use it - clamp it to a desk, or pick up a cheap rig like a PlayStation challenge, depending on how much space you have.

Getting a wheel was a game changer for me, I’ve since spent a small fortune on it all but yes it’s worth it.

Budget is key here.
What you want, what you need and what you can afford are separate things in this game as the good option is a lot more expensive to engineer.
You want a direct drive wheel. Best, fastest feedback but £500 for the wheelbase alone + wheel + shifters.
Pedals you want a load cell brake ideally.
You might want seperate shifters, button boxes, handbrake.
Then a wheelstand or a full cockpit
Motion
Triple screens, VR.

Look at the decent brands, usually Logitech or Thrustmaster make sure they are compatible with your console (xbox or PS usually on the cheaper brands) PC supports most things. The base models are good enough to get you up and running.

Second hand can be a good shout, people buy and get bored, upgrade or the wife doesn't want 'all that stuff' lying around. Loads on FB and Ebay.
