3 Bed house to caravan on Ma’s driveway

Yes folks, as per title. The mothership has agreed for me to ‘return to port’ and park a ‘small’ caravan on her driveway. I’m presently working away Mon-Thurs so I’m paying c. £1,400 in rent/council tax and bills to spend two/sometimes three nights at home.

I have zero idea as to what to look for, other than I think I want a fixed bed - though some I’ve seen look barely larger than a single. Is it better to buy a caravan that has a fold out bed as it’d be larger? I plan to buy a house in 6-8 months so I’d like something I could re sell afterwards without too much of a hit.

Budget is circa 4k. Have looked on Gumtree but really don’t know what I’m looking at. Ma has said she’d prefer a small caravan or camper van (though not sure how she thinks that would work). My son will be in the second bedroom in the house. I’d like to be relatively self sufficient, I.e, toilet, cubicle shower (not wet room), oven, hob. I like the look of the 4 birth caravans but I think she might have a wobble.

Anyone know of any reputable second hand places or provide advice on the private market?

Also, if anyone happens to know of a clean, safe storage solution that isn’t one of the big boys that want £700 pcm for a double garage sized unit, in the Surrey/Hampshire area I’d be most grateful. Need to put the contents of a three bed house plus single garage somewhere (!).

Your at the bottom of the market, and a 4k van is really a 2k van.

Biggest issue at this price point is damp, personally i'd use the caravan as a bed but try and use the house for showers and number two's

you could go for something like this, leave the livingroom as it is but set the dinette up as a single bed.

Layout probably isn't as important given your living on a drive, you really just need a place to sleep.

With winter coming up I'd rather sleep on an inflatable bed or a sofa in the house than in a delapidated caravan

I would just buy bunk beds for you and your son in the spare room and tolerate your mum until the new year.

I could comfortably live in our 6 berth caravan on the drive as long as it's hooked up to the electric.

Double glazed, wet central heating, king-size bed, hot n cold running water, decent shower.

It cost more than 4k though.

I know of a Winnebago with a 16,000 mile small block v8 in 1970’s interior in surrey ‘ Hants that could be bought for about £4k, I think it needs work for an mot. It is not one of the huge ones. Message me if you want me to put you in touch.

About 20 years ago (before kids), we bought a caravan for £250 and lived in it for 9 weeks. ( Couldn't afford a bridging loan, so this was our option). Stayed on a campsite. Every Friday the campsite owners moved our van elsewhere on the site so they could cut the grass, which was always quite amusing trying to find it again after a day's work.

Eventually house move went through and we sold the van for £275.

Pretty sure I would not do the same now with kids and winter approaching.......

Yeah, we lived in a £ special when my parents built our house. Remember it very well.

No, and I won’t be.

Getting screwed left, right and centre (as most folk are). If a jobsworth wants to pull me up on staying two nights a week on Ma’s driveway then they can try it.
