I have got a recall for my BMW (430D X Drive), just curious to see what courtesy car i should be expecting / any advice on how to secure a half decent one?? I don't want to be handling in my car to be receiving a mini or a bloody 116i or something silly.

When i asked about a courtesy car they said they have questions to see if i qualify...one of the questions was 'are you a footballer or influencer' very surprised to hear them ask that! I think due to being under 25 i'm unlikely to receive anything with real power but i'm hopeful to receive an M-Lite car.

Odd question did they really ask that ?

First questions we ask our customers if they request a courtesy car are, Are you an existing customer or did you buy the car from us.

If either are no then no courtesy car is provided,

Don't hold your breath - they don't keep nice cars on courtesy fleets usually. When my 840i went in, I got a 118d for the day which I really didn't get on with - it felt like I was perched on it rather than 'in it'. Was very glad to get back in mine at the end of the day!

Not sure I'd say a 1 series or a Mini is a 'silly' courtesy car for what is essentially a 2 door 3 series

Car is a car, it's just a loaner

Haha yep! The questions they asked were:
Are you an influence / footballer
Are you under 25
Do you have over 8 points

Ah that doesn’t give me great hope since of course an 840i is far superior to my 430d haha.

He mentioned on the phone he couldn’t tell me what it would be but he thought it would most likely be a 1 series based on the answers I gave..unfortunately I said I’m not an influencer, I wonder what he would have said if I was an influencer…

Probably insurance requirements - any "yes" is likely a higher risk and outside their coverage.

I agree they aren’t silly for a courtesy car but you would hope you would receive a car of similar standard e.g similar power (although my car just scrapes 5.1 seconds 0-60 I would be slightly disappointed receiving a 1.6L 1 series/mini)

Yeah I agree I imagine if I were to say I was over 25 it would have a slightly different outcome. Thankfully I don’t have over 8 points as I suspect I would be refused a courtesy car full stop

Don’t experts much and you won’t be disappointed.

When my M140i was in for warranty work I had a MINI Cooper on a few occasions and the other time was a 118i.

I did luck out once when my old E90 330i was in the body shop; I was due to get a Countryman but it got sold so the only thing left was an F30 330d x drive. I really liked it in all fairness.

True.. I guess I should go in presuming I’ll get a 1.6L mini and anything better is a positive! I certainly wouldn’t be disappointed receiving a 330D x drive!

Unless they are keeping the car for weeks then why are you really bothered what you get. As long as it is roadworthy then its doing the job, expecting them to have a fleet of fancy courtesy cars is unrealistic.

The odd questions must be insurance related.

See I think this is rather silly comment.. why should I be grateful? It’s BMW that have produced a car which doesn’t reach regulations meaning I have to take time out of 2 of my working days and travel and be out of my car and I’m supposed to be grateful for that?

I’m not too fussed but if there’s anything I can do that means I have the opportunity to drive a nice car for a couple days then that would be great! I’ve been considering buying a new BMW so potentially receiving a different one would be nice to experience as you can’t get too much of a feel just on a short test drive

You are being kept mobile, it will be something from either the BMW range or MINi range, it will be a decent car and it will be fine for a day.

you should be grateful that they can provide you with a car at all. If any of my cars have ever gone wrong and need work at a garage, I don't bh and moan that the manufacturer has got it wrong, I politely ask for a loan car and get what I'm given.

You aren't helping the stereotype that our generation is entitled. It's not like you'll be without your car for weeks or months.

Why would you think this? At the end of the day all BMWs are just mass-market stuff now, nothing premium. I'd imagine if you took your Bentley or Ferrari to a main dealer you might get something reasonable (or perhaps even just something from elsewhere the VAG group in the case of Bentley).

Why would all BMW dealers tie up potentially hundreds of thousands of pounds in 'loaners' (which I'd think people are more likely to thrash and/or bump/scrape due to unfamiliarity) just so someone can have 'similar power'? What about BMW owners with M-cars with 600bhp? Should the dealer keep some M5s round the back just in case..? It wouldn't make any sense.

This is a nonsensical point. What are the odds that BMW just happen to have the exact car, trim and engine you're thinking of buying? They're loan cars - they get thrashed and trashed like a hire car - if I were a dealer I'd be giving out the cheapest option I could too.

If you're thinking about buying a new one, go test drive that model.

Yeah at the end of the day its not the end of the world, just curious to see what i should expect and if there is anything i can do to perhaps ensure i receive a half decent car

But if they weren't to provide me with a car i would
1. be stranded an hour from my house
2. have to take even more time out of two working days which is already a great inconvenience
3. be without my current car all because BMW haven't been able to keep to regulations at no fault of my own. Purely down to BMW.

It's already a great inconvenience, I am far from 'grateful' as i have to take hours out of two of my working days and do a 2 hour round trip on both days!
