Ha three times here, know how you feel.

Tomorrow’s job is to blitz his old bedroom, chuck away all the tat, posters, old socks etc and repurpose it as a guest room. That’s what I did with all of mine, very cathartic. Stops the little buggers coming home and slipping back into childhood. They are still welcome to come and stay but the game has moved on.

Not today, but 5 years ago I was similar.
He wasn’t only my son,but my mate as well. We’d go West Ham,gym, gigs, cinema, play Xbox, watch SpongeBob.
His sister went a year later, and tbh I’ve still got a bit of empty nest syndrome.

That is exactly how to do it.
But you’ve got to be quick and decisive. Otherwise the womenfolk start treating their rooms like some sort of holy shrine to lost prophets, waiting at the window for the prodigal son to return.

Friends had 3 kids. When the last went to uni they downsized to a 2 bed cottage in the middle of nowhere (no transport links, very much a locals pub, no 4g, etc)

"You are always welcome to stay for the weekend and visit..."

...not moving back home.

It's called empty nest syndrome. When last one left I was the same, felt like a bereavement.

I was a bit teary and choked when my daughter went off a few years ago, however she was back every weekend (reasonably local), TBH it would have been nice if she'd stayed up there!

The second term she was on placement so was back home and then Covid hit and I think she then only went back for exams!

If its any consolation by now he'll be pissed, by 10pm off his tits on something chemical, and with any luck by 2am balls deep in a lovely 18 year old. He won't be worried about you. hehe

And by Friday afternoon he'll be down the clinic with a nasty rash... yikes

Well at least in 6 weeks time at least he won’t have to Google where it is.

Not my mum! I left for uni on the Sunday but we had a family dinner with extended family a few days later on the Thursday; I went to get something out of my room and she had already painted it magnolia, put in new furniture and bedding. And I was promptly told “don’t go in there, it’s for guests only”.

My daughter is overseas so its not always easy to visit, it's weird at first but you do get used to it, easter and xmas are extra special now, she's currently working in a school for troubled kids as a part of her degree, doors locked in corridors and walkie talkie radios, sometimes id rather not know what she's up to.

Speak to your kid before changing what was/is "their" room - remember that the Uni holidays where they will likely still return for a longer period of time, and it'll be after Uni finishes that they'll vacate properly.

My parents did the whole "clear out" and didn't tell me - they even removed my bed completely so there was no chance of staying. Whilst completely understandable (old bed, I'd moved to Australia etc), it gave pangs of sadness when I found out 6months later by accident, especially since my elder sister's room had been preserved for years after she moved out. It'd be worse if I was in the UK and simply gone to Uni...
