Car back from the garage but had lots of problems getting the radio to work there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the head unit. The aerial is under the front clam attached to the nearside panel just inboard of the wheel. That was replaced with a new one but would only work if the end of the aerial was held by hand to earth it. Then tried a window mounted one but that is no better. Apart from sticking an external one on the roof has anyone got any ideas why either of the other two won't work ?
thanks in advance

What about earthing it to the chassis somehow?

Tried that . the actual aerial should earth as it clamps to the panel and seems to do so but doesn't help with reception. I'm a bit concerned that if I get them to drill the hole for a roof mounted aerial it still won't earth properly.

Vegantune popped an active one just above the roll bar, above the rear view mirror. Wasn't brilliant, but a lot better than it was before.

Think I have sorted it. What you need to do is remove part of the cover from the coax and wrap a piece of wire around the core. tape it all up and then attach the end of the new piece to either a metal part of the car or back to the radio casing. that should give a gopd earthing.
will try it next week and let you know if it works
