At the moment I'm stuck in a room with three young women who are speaking at each other with that gutteral vocal tone that I've learnt is called 'vocal fry'.

Where the hell does this come from? It's absolutely horrible.

I know language evolves and all that, and I don't want to sound like a moany old bloke shouting at the sky, but for God's sake, it makes me want to pull my teeth out.

Now a bloke has joined in with the same vocal mannerisms. Ugh!

I didn't know that's what it's called but yes, it's horrid.

Seems to me that the aim of anyone speaking like this is to convey such a level of cool disdain to the listener and world in general that they can’t even be bothered to put the requisite level of effort into speaking normally.

So not just affected, but lazy and arrogant too, and therefore clearly deserving of a prison sentence.

It was just a horrible noise, all talking at each other in that ghastly way. Not sure there were even topics involved. hehe

No idea. I thought it was just how they were, too.

Valley girls I think evolved into the vocal fry thing.

Meanwhile, this came to mind.

One of the voices in the computer game "Worms WMD" is "Valley girl".

When they're the enemy I seem to do better because i want them to STFU as quickly as possible, but I tend not to choose them as the enemy as I enjoy it less.

It's been around for years. Decades even. From what I can tell it started with impossibly cute, while highly bhy, Californian girls in US TV shows.

Horrid.

First time I went to California in the 90s I heard that valley girl speak. Horrid.
Then I met a North Carolina chick who also hated it. She was hot for my accent (even though she asked if I was Austrian as my English was so good) and I was hot for hers. Yum.

It’s just a variation of “Like, oh my god, like. Reallly, whatever” etc.

I lived in LA/ Orange County in the late 80's. Valley Girl speak was very much the thing (though Encino, is toadally like, rurrly north of Mission Viejo). I watched Bill and Ted a few years later and it felt like a documentary.

I also got the Aussie thing, mainly because they didn't have clue with a broad Yorkshire accent.
