Mootard shortage?
Discussion
Amora fine et forte feeds my mustard habit. Buy online from French supplier, 4 x 1kg jars at a time.
Haven't been able to get any for a year, the factory has stopped production due to the shortage of seeds.
About to run out, very sad as it is head and shoulders above anything you could get here, even before the shortage.

Dijon is only a few kms away from my house in France, I buy Maille mustard but much prefer the Edmond Fallot brand. I bring plenty back here to the UK. A few of the mustards I have at the moment. The two smaller jars in the last photo are mustard with pinot noir and a mustard with green peppercorns both of which are great with red meat.
One of my favorite Maille products is the very heavily flavored tarragon mustard which I love with fatty, juicy, crispy lamb chops.

My friend who has family in Dijon says it is impossible to buy anything other than flavoured mustard there at present. Presumably because the flavoured stuff makes the precious mustard seeds go a bit further. Or they make more money selling it to export markets who are less price sensitive.rdjohn said:
Here in France mustard disappeared from the shelves during April. We got friends to bring us some Dijon mustard from the UK.
Apparently, French mustard seed originates from Canada and the crop failed there last year.
If you are buying moutard de Bourgogne then the mustard seeds must come from Burgundy due to its PGI. (Protected Geographical Indication)

Anyone else noticed the lack of mustard on the shelves? I'm partial to Dijon mustard, but it's been impossible to get hold of. I assumed it was Brexit related, but in France this week the shelves were bare too (sacre bleu!). Sainsburys keep sending us Polish mustard instead, and in France the only 'Dijon' mustard was Polish.
I went investigating...
Turns out Dijon mustard is not an AOC (ie the name is not protected). A shortage of mustard seeds from Canada (due to drought) has been exacerbated by the war in Ukraine preventing white mustard seeds entering the market.
The upshot is - if you see it in stock, buy it!
