Found a set of wheels I like on FB marketplace, they are not available in the UK. Set I've found is in France and reasonably priced.

Has anyone brought a set of wheels or any car parts back into the UK since Brexit without too much fuss? Will be driving back with them in the car.

I've used the tunnel a few times recently and at no point has the car been stopped other than at passport control and ticket control.
They did swab the steering wheel of my car once (for exposives/drugs I suppose).

Personally I'd just go get the wheels and bring them back. The worst that can happen is that you'll need to pay import duty on them.
The ferry is a lot cheaper than the tunnel at the moment btw, especially on a short return.

Yeah this is usually the case with me, but I'm sure if they spot a car with a full set of wheels in might raise an eyebrow. Would just be my luck.

I guess it's a risk you take, and as you say worst case they'll make you pay to import. Although as to how the duty would be calculated on used wheels I'm not sure.

Perhaps you are on the way back from the ring?

Reminds me of that news story where the cyclists sent their bike ahead to Spain for a charity event and flew over to be met with a large import bill.

For info, I tried doing this using made-up values and for a set of wheels bought in france for €1000, it came back with an import duty of £16.90 and VAT of £172.44.
Obviously up to you if you want to claim the VAT (or I guess TVA as it's France) back.

I suppose on new wheels where you have the invoice and a company VAT number that would be easy enough to do with the Douane. In this case it's a bit more complicated if I buy them used privately, and pay cash.

I've read on UK gov site you can have a personal allowance of £390 providing goods are for your own use. Suppose I could claim the value of the wheels is £350 and then they wouldn't be due any tax.

That's crazy. But then again plenty of people take bikes to the EU by car and don't pay any tax to import, so there must be some sort of allowance/exception. Or just common sense would be great on personal items.

Go with a friend and buy two wheels each?

If you are with your items it's fairly obvious they are being used and taken home so no fees

The issue is how do they know that a truck load of bikes are being used then exported home, rather than being imported ?

It's why the couriers who took motorcycles to Europe have ceased trading (they took your bike, you flew over to ride it for a holiday then they brought it back)

Bung them in the back and stick your stuff on top, and then some bottles of wine and cheese on top of that.

Technically speaking should you not have an ATA carnet when bringing a bike with you? Especially if the value is more than your duty free allowance. Unless there's a clause somewhere that allows temporary import

I've no idea I just know a lot of bikers who take trail or race bikes in the back of their vans to Europe - they don't have a problem but the trucks taking multiple bikes, without their owners, do

What are the post brexit wine limits now?

Apologies, back on topic now, you could get a receipt from the person you buy them from for €300, if you get stopped, plead ignorance and show them the receipt.

Buy extra long wheel bolts and add them to the existing wheels.

biggrin That kind of didn't work for Jeremys Mazda MX5 in the Christmas Top Gear Special.

Trolley jack, tools and a Nurburgring sticker - after all they're your spare wheels aren't they?

Just tell them you have been to the Nurburgring and they are your spare wheels.
