Blown differential
Discussion
That's very bad luck! The Sierra diff is normally very reliable. Fitted to the Ford it's usually the rest of the car has dropped to pieces before the diff goes.
These diffs come in various sizes as well as ratios. On my S3C it's a 7.5" with standard size drive flanges. Also there is a 7.5" as fitted to a 2WD Sierra Cossie but that has slightly bigger drive flanges IIRC. Also you have the option of open or viscous coupled LSD. Supposedly the S3C has the LSD, but mine did not, so I bought one. Try Andy at www.donorspares.com He is very knowledgeable about all the variations on Sierra/Granada stuff and keeps a good stock. He is located somewhere near Ipswich.

Well accept my apologies and thanks for the replies, turns out it was the prop shaft, it was vibrating so much that it damged the oil seal on the gear box, the oil ran down the exhaust, the heat causing it to smoke. The oil ran down the pipes and onto the diff hence thoight diff seals had gone. Now the concern is the gear box, got the prop off to be repaired and stronger u joints. Not sure if the gear box has been damaged lost a lot of oil. The diff handled a prop that was bouncing all over the place. If the gear box is damged is it worth rebuilding or replacing. Any thoughts welcome.
Blimey! Sounds like a spectacular failure. Most likely you have the Ford type 9 g/box.
If going for a secondhand replacement, you need the one as fitted to the Capri 2.8 or XR4i 2WD. If you get one from a 4 cylinder Ford the ratios & bellhousing will be wrong. Also there are 2 different length input shafts available. These boxes are very common and popular with the kit car folks. Often they come with mechanical speedo drive which you would have to swap for the elec sender from yours.
If it was me I would probably just fit a new oil seal (from Ford dealer) and see what happens. Worth doing the front seal at the same time as they tend to leak after a while anyway.
Plenty of places do rebuilds. One I have heard good things about (but no personal experience) is BGH Geartech on 01580 714114 (Kent). If yours is a late model S you may have the Ford MT75. I don't have any detailed knowledge of this one, but you can tell it from the type 9 as it has a webbed aluminium casing and integral bellhousing instead of smooth cast iron and bolt-on bellhousing.
Good luck, JW
