The value gap between a triptronic 993 and a manual one seems to be widening.

https://collectingcars.com/for-sale/1997-porsche-9...

I reckon this car would have been £20k £25k more had it been a manual (50% more).

I know it’s been discussed for 15 years or so, but is there actually a viable conversion process or company offering it ?

The cost would most likely make it not worth it.

Labour prices even at Indy's are pretty eye watering and no doubt would make it a non starter if you went down that route IMO.

Plus you'll end up with a car worth less than a factory manual..not really many plus points I'm afraid.

Discussed here a while back..

I agree ... I only once drove a Tiptronic and didn't really like it ... part of the problem is that the PDK is so much better ...

you'd be taking away originality which at least this car seems to have in spades,, I think if if had have been maintained better (last service over 5 years ago, then another 5 year gap etc,, various oil leaks on the MOTs), and if they had have got on top of the exterior and interior problems, this car would have made £60k i reckon,, great colour.

My take; it’s a £35-40k 993 Tip that has had its value stretched because it’s a ‘wide-bodied S’ - which doesn’t actually make a better car.

Tiptronic S on the 993 wasn’t bad, but old torque convertor technology, and the 6-spd manual is just so much better and in tune with the car.

Mileage is too high for ‘collectors’, needs paintwork, and most 993s need attention in the areas you can’t see. Colour combo seems to be the most common on 993s - the light interior shows marks and ages poorly, and the navy metallic, like black, only looks good when it’s detail perfect.

To spend money changing the gearbox would make no financial sense IMO. Fair question, though.

Suppose another way of looking at it would be - if the plan was to keep it forever with no concern re resale value, could a converted Tip work out cheaper?

It would want to be a lot cheaper to compensate for the hassle and I suspect the price gap just isn't big enough. You want to be saving a solid five-figure sum to make it worth while. If it was, say, only a £5k saving, can't see that it 's worth the ballache. So even without a thought to resale, suspect it doesn't add up.

And you have to bear in mind that the value of everything it likely to take a hit in the near future.

Or simply fit Mercedes’ flappy paddles to it, thrash it severely to learn gearbox to change quickly and it then becomes quite a hoot for 20k cheaper. Conversion approx 1hr…..simples

You can spank that as hard as you like, nothing is improving that woeful excuse for a gearbox. Has to be the worst box ever installed in a performance car?

I bought a 964 tip when I only had the use of my right leg for driving for a period. At leasti kept mobile and in a 911, but what a woeful thing. Was it any better in the 993?

For the conversion to manual is there any ECU stuff to be done as well?

It's only use really. Can't see any other benefit. I think there is a ecu connection. The dash/clocks are certainly different.

Values keep heading up, Is this a viable conversion now? Especially on a C2 s

Pro

Manual rowing

More desirable to purchasers

Sale price increase...cover cost of conversion???

Cons

Cost

Less desirable due to originality?

I guess if you swap and lose the originality, you exclude the sandals and socks buyers, which is pretty much the entire 993 marketplace. : )

My thoughts are...the older these get and the higher the prices, the car condition and spec will be more important than the history?

Your problem is that *just* the gearbox has a 'value' that is getting close to the price difference? If you want the early gearbox, G50/21, then I'd say you were almost at the price difference. And where are you going to source any of this kit? The Trade will beat you to 90% of wrecks.

Good luck.
