Looking to upgrade my 05 VW Polo (5k max budget)

I've had my 2005 VW Polo for about 6 years and I feel as though it's time to think about changing cars. I'm looking for something with a decent enough MPG and comfortable as I do a 50-mile commute every day (25 miles each way). Since starting a new job 6 weeks ago, I have been having some issues with my car which is making me think about getting a different car.
This is what I am looking for:
Roughly 2010 onwards but would consider an older car
Decent mpg for the commute (mainly on the dual carriageway)
Saloon or hatchback (must be five-door)
Max budget of 5k but can be cheaper
Can be either petrol or diesel, don't really know which one would be the best for my situation
I know there are probably tons of posts like this, but I am absolutely clueless when it comes to cars. All my mates and family have new cars on PCP but don't think that's for me. Any help would be appreciated and ask any questions if you want to! Cheers
