Hi,

Last weekend I was travelling down from Northampton to London on the M1 and it was during the Variable Speed stretch where there speed went down to 60 then to 50.

I passed a gantry when the speed was meant to be 50 and I stuck my cruise control on 50 (so actual speed probs 48/49mph) and switched into the middle lane and I got flashed.

I’m just wondering if this has happened to anyone else or did the gantry speed change as I was going past to 40 and I got flashed because of that?

Any clarification would be great. Many thanks!

Last week I got flashed in, or near, where you were. I was doing 65mph where the restriction had been lifted for several signs, so was NSL. Not heard yet...

Yeah it’s a bit weird and I couldn’t really find an answer anywhere. It’s a bit dumb we got flashed.

Do you know it was you who got flashed? Could it be someone in another lane?

There were people in other lanes but I wasn’t paying too much attention to them, I can’t be sure if they were speeding, but there were people in the other lanes.

Do these cameras randomly flash?

In my case it was flashing at a lot of cars. L2 and L3 were all travelling at around 60-70 due to traffic conditions, L1 was around 45 due to traffic leaving and joining.

Yes sometimes they go nutty and flash away as if they're trying to send morse code. Probably some some random firmware update or other IT borkage

I had a similar experience on Saturday evening on the M1 between 24 & 23A (Nottingham). I merged onto the M1 at J24, heading south, and getting off at 23A for the A42. There's barely a kilometre between these junctions, so I didn't even bother accelerating to 70, just sat in Lane 1 at around 65 indicated, slowly catching the truck in front. All signs off, so assumed NSL. The Hadecs camera flashed twice at someone, can't figure out who or why, as nothing was going seemingly fast.

I now wait to see if anything will arrive in the post, and if so, why?

I travelled south on the M1 on Saturday evening. What a balls up.

- from the A1(M) the gantries said that the M1 was closed from J37 to J36. Waze was desperate to send me a different way (M62 to Hull). As it was late ish and quite I decided I’d come off at J37, skirt round and rejoin at J36. Except I didn’t have to as it wasn’t closed. L3 was closed but that was it. Bad luck to anyone who was suckered into a diversion.

- the long section that’s being “smarted” that starts south of J16 southbound has now been shortened. The southern section is complete. Except that the gantries, like those on the M4 smart section westbound out of London, are perma-locked at 60 and armed with hadecs3 cameras. That’s in addition to the specs average cams that were there when the roadworks were in progress, and which have been left there just for sts and giggles.

- the stretch around Luton/Dunstable is like driving into an episode of Wacky Races. Cars blasting up the inside, extravagant lane changes into tiny gaps rocking the cars on their springs - great.

- 6 miles from the M25 the gantries say queue ahead. Then they go to 50, then 40. The message gantry says “traffic held for safety”. And then - and this is around 10.30 pm I join the back of a four lane snake of stationary traffic stretching as far as the eye can see (which was quite a long way). Engines off, no one moves. After 15 mins L1,2,3 signage flicks from 40 to a right pointing arrow. Another ten mins and we start moving. All traffic is filtered into L4 for a few miles, and L1,2,3 are coned off, for a total of two work vehicles. WTAF?

I usually peel off at 15A and head over to the M40 for the run into London. Every time I’ve thought “ahh, it’s quiet, I’ll stay on the M1”, I have regretted it.

And for the OP: a hadecs3 did a single flash at me in the more southerly smart zone. NSL and I was at 72 in L2 according to Waze. I had someone so far up my arse they could have turned the volume down in my car despite L3 being empty. I’ve assumed they triggered it - if a single flash is indeed a hadecs3 operating (I’ve seen them double flash from the opposite cw).

Very true that section is madness.

This happened to me once, played the 14 day game and was fine.

Approached the gantry 'hot', came in at the prescribed speed limit displayed, had one flash but no second flash from what I can tell. I was the fastest traffic in the row going under I'm sure.

Yeah I’m pretty sure I saw 2 flashes, but like I mentioned above, I wasn’t the only car on that stretch of motorway, there were other cars in other lanes
