is the handling on pre 2004 models really as twitchy/unpredictable as the motoring press makes out?
I am looking to buy one, dont think I can stretch to a 2004 model. Any comments appreciated, cheers.

1999 - 2002 is the most lively, 2002 slightly softer, 2004 slightly softer again I believe. Great in the dry, need care in the wet. Have a look at my profile for costs and go here and read the FAQ for all the info you will need:

No, it is a light, powerful, RWD sports car. it requires respect and progressive driving

the link above will help a lot

I've got an '02 and it's my first RWD car - haven't had any real problems. Douglas is right about the model years, 99-01 was the lariest, 02-03 was revised to be more compliant and 04 onwards even more so.

No...

Not unless your hamfisted. Be progressive with the controls especially in the wet and you'll be OK.

As has already been said it's a fairly light (at least by modern standards) rwd sports car with 240 horses. It needs to be treated with respect...

During my recent holiday to France it kept amazing me with it's grip and balance...

Buy one... I doubt you'll regret it

In the dry ,drive it like you stole it

In the wet just be a bit sensible ,and if you do lose the back end just blame it diesel on the road

cheers lads.
I drive a gti6 now, which is very easy to drive fast in the dry and wet, and fairly easy to control when it does bite. Will take me a while to get used to a lairy rwd car, but am sure i will cope
got my heart set on one, wont be until next feb/march time, are prices generally stable through the year, or do they fall during winter?

They do drop by a small amount come winter time, but on the other hand no matter what time of year there is always 1 or 2 bargins to be had

Have a read through this tells you what to look for in a used S

And theres always a few for sale in this section if you want to compare prices

It's the pleasure all rwd owners have in the wet (even managed to get my Jeep sliding in 2wd mode on Sunday - got a dead arm from my passenger who didn't appreciate it at all!!!).

The key is how much warning and how responsive to correction they are - I'd imagine the s2k is pretty decent though - my Fd's lovely but it's 12-15 year-old technology and the Honda should be much nicer...

I had an 04 S2000 until 3 months ago ...... had it 12 months and no problems at all in the dry or wet.

It is RWD - no worse or better than any other RWD car without traction control...... infact, no, I am lying - I had a Carlton GSi years ago and that was positively dangerous in the wet.

I loved my S2000..... I only sold it because I made the mistake of driving a TVR Griffith !
