What can I replace my V90 with

I’m pretty sick of my V90. I’m a family of 4 with two kids under 4 (3 & 8 months). So boot space for a pram and general crap you have to take away with you. My biggest issue with the Volvo is the engine and gear box plus I think our car was built on a Friday PM and has lots of gremlins I’m not comfortable having out of warranty.

We only have 1 car and I think for a while we will only need one so budget can be healthy.

I am after a petrol auto even a hybrid if people think certain cars are worth is as most of our driving is either town or 40 miles to grand parents and back.

Any thoughts?

I’ve thought things like a 5 series e.g. 530e but what I hate about these type of cars is they just stick the batteries in the boot space and then you have a compromised and it’s raised and a bit crap so maybe should dodge them until they’re built into the car properly.

Any suggestions?

What vintage of V90 do you have? I had the V90 cross country T5. Really liked it, it wasn't the most engaging drive but made up for it with its capability to ferry our family of 4 around in comfort. Really not intended or set up to pressed hard, performance I always thought a bit lousy.

We not have the XC60 plug in hybrid and Really like it. Plenty of poke when you want it however >95% of our journeys are within the range of the pure electric mode (newer gen has twice the 20 ish mile range ours has).

The T5 returned 27 mpg in our ownership the XC60 we're on 65 mpg after 16k miles. I think the pure electric range on the beemers is pretty lower still. It's a fairly short time kids are in prams then buggies, volvo seemed to sacrifice the boxy practical shape in the name of styling. The Skoda superbs in either hatch or estate are excellent all rounders.

We have the latest so 2016> with ours bring a 2019 car. It’s a D4 so around 160 bhp. I do like the comfort of the Volvo but I’ve really gone off them down to this car and also our dealer is bloody awful.

BMW will still have you on first name terms with the mechanic if its built like my friends i8.

How about a Lexus RX 450h? Could spend anywhere between £10k and £60k as you've not given your budget. Will only need its yearly trip to mechanic for Mot and service, decent sized boot, comfy and spacious and OK performance considering it's size. New model is coming out so prev gen ones might be decent value.

I had a v90cc t5 and ordered a cupra leon estate phev to replace it. The cupra was delayed so they gave me a captur phev to tode me over. My 2 kids are a older so no prams, but I do like to park at the airport when we go away. Surprisingly we manged fine taking 3 large suitcases and hand luggage. It's made me question if I really need an estate going forward, which is useful as I doubt the cupra will ever turn up.

Interesting suggestions so far, budget it max 60k as realistically I’m going to be financing it so monthlies are manageable at that price still.

Yeh only thing that annoys me about Skoda is the lipped boot and the fact you have to pay for it to be flush. Other than that they’re a strong contender

Plenty around with the boot floor option spec'd I believe. Mine has it (2017 L&K 280), but I can't say it would bother me if it didn't.

How about a Kia Sorrento Hybrid, brand new with a 7 year warranty. Its more like an XC-90 in concept but still makes for a very good family wagon. Im assuming comfort and practicality trump sportiness.

Are they the same seats? I know the leather seats in my friend's Sorrento are lovely, she replaced a current shape XC-90. Was a lovely car but much more expensive than an equivalent Sorrento and she kept getting niggles. Its definitely worth going and checking a top spec one out

My kids are a similar age as yours and I took a punt on a used C4 Grand Picasso. Ok perception of reliability is questionable but for ride, space and parcticality without being absolutely huge it's just the ticket.

I don't know if these fall in budget but there are hybrid version of the C4 and C5 platform cars and the linked DS brand too.

I meant to add, its also worth looking at the Hyundai Sandra Fe Phev Ultimate, basically the Hyundai version of the Sorrento. Has a bit of Landcruiser about it. Also a few others worth a mention.



New Mazda CX-60 bouldering be worth a shout, early reviews are positive



Skoda Kodiaq is a big old beast with loads of space, no hybrid but there is a vRS version.



You could take a chance and go for the Maserati Levante Hybrid GT definitely stands out from the crowd and in budget.



The new VW Multivan ticks a lot of boxes and is a hybrid.



And yes, I'm in a red mood
