Touristenfahrten = Free for all, everything from coaches to mopeds will be out (and everything in between) ergo driving standards might/will be varied, from non-existent to full on ‘Ring regulars on a banzai quali lap.
Yeh I know I've been on a few, but the OP's original post was just a link to a video and "why?"

Yes, it is, although not always.

Standards change from minute to minute but I'd say in general most people are decent enough even on TF. Unfortunately, it only takes one moron to ruin it for everyone... and with TF there are far, far more cars on track at any one time than during track days, therefore much more likelihood of coming across one of those morons.

You've answered your own question by posting the video evidence that it is like that.

I agree the evidence is there, but why would anybody wish to tangle in that way ?

And why would any operator condone it ?

My "really" was rhetorical incredulity ....

Thanks for the explanation ... I did not realise that the track is open for all "out of hours" ... so that's where the term "free for all" comes from ??

In the video there are night shots from a race accident during the 24hs. I love racing at the Ring but wouldn't touch Touristenfahrten with a barge pole. Too many people with too big an ambition-execution-gap around...

For years I have hated the ring with a passion. However I had only driven it on TF days and yes it was bloody dreadful.
A couple of years ago one of my sons showed me up somewhat by driving me round a lovely smooth lap in the Cayman R. I decided I needed to get over myself and give it a proper go. Since then I have done a few track days there and I am so much happier now. Track days at the ring are great, it’s so long that even with a few hundred cars there it’s never busy on track, it’s so much more confidence inspiring when you don’t have to worry about the risk of a biker lying in the road in front of you, or a van upside down, or a stationary coach in the middle of the road. All three of which have happened to me on TF days.
The other massive benefit is that you get the full track not just most of it, and doing 3 or 4 laps in each stint is a much better way to get tuned in and learn it.
To summarize: ring yes, TF days no.

I've done TF days in my 986 and loved it, had an amazing time and I will be back there.

I drive very carefully when i'm there, no interest in trying to set lap times and I by and large stay out of everyone else's way.

I do track days in the UK and I won't drive at TF like I do on a UK track day.

The section shown on the video is known to be one of the dodgiest sections because spectator numbers are big on that bend, everyone is filming and I think there is a tendancy by some drivers to show off for the crowds, personally my least favourite section of track.

A group of us who were racing at the Nurburgring F1 track did a couple of laps of the Ring in hire cars. Now that was a laugh. Amazed it didn't end in disaster. 3 abreast and finding a bus over the brow of a hill was a comedy moment

Which kinda sums up everything that's wrong about the attitude of many TF punters.

I've done tf days for well over a decade, I've had a great time almost every lap. Not sure what the hysteria is about, If there's an ahole in your mirror (lol), let them by.

Coming around a blind corner to find a crashed car in the middle of the track isn't fun though. I get the impression if that hasn't happened to you you've been lucky or you're only going on very quiet weekdays!

I've only been a couple of times but one day had 3 separate incidences of just-crashed cars across the track in front of me, including 2 on a single lap (first lap after a long closure for a more serious crash)...

Exactly this. Too much ego gets in the way, instead of just pulling over and then following the lines of someone who is quicker
