Engine hesitation. What am I feeling?

Hi.

I have a naturally aspirated V8. If I accelerate, then let off the throttle, then reapply the throttle, the car stutters slightly. The car is going to be looked at, but I was wondering if anyone could hazard a guess as to what might be causing it?

It could be a number of things, for example MAF sensor(s).

What car/year is it? That could make a difference. There may be a known issue with that particular engine etc.

Certainly be helpful to know if we are talking about super-modern EFI and ECU or old style carbs.
Standard or mapped (if mappable).

My initial reaction would be fuelling somehow, probably lean rather than rich. But could be other things,

Seems similar. The one post says "This hesitancy is overcome by a deliberate and notable throttle application leading to intended acceleration" that's exactly as I see it.

It’s a long time since I’ve owned a naturally aspirated car, is what I’m describing unacceptable?

A modern car in good condition shouldn't stutter or hesitate under any conditions.
