I wonder why this is? Has there been a trend away from private selling?
I have advertised a number of cars on PH and had an incredibly low response. This surprises me as I would have though between the members there could be a good trade of used cars.

Pistonheads is terrible for buying cars frankly, there are so few compared to other sites and the prices are often very optimistic...hence why the 'spotted' cars are not at all competitive. Take the Audi Quattro Sport for example.

Sold all my cars privately through PH from 2006-2019. I was genuinely surprised when sold my C63 (in 2019) and M4 (this year) through Facebook marque specific groups, to the first person to view both times. Same filtering of chancers required but maybe a shift is happening. It was free too, although so is PH.
I managed to get a buyer for my Monaro V8 in 2021 via PH. But for more modern stuff, it's thin on the ground. Plenty of TVRs in the classifieds 
but not many seem to be shifting.
Hardly any bikes, and it isn't helped when so many prospective purchasers seem to consider WBAC valuations on cars as some sort of a guide or ceiling price, instead of the floor.

I guess for most things “PH worthy”, they’ll be typically into five figures, meaning buyers are more comfortable dealing with a trader, plus there may be finance involved/required.
Couple that with the general pain selling privately is, and the likes of Cazoo/Motorway/WBAC offering a path of least resistance, I’m not surprised the private market is declining.
The last car I sold privately didn’t make it onto the open market; it was a transaction between owners club members. I’m crap at selling cars as I hate dealing with the public!

Of what I'm selling the two cheapest in the country are £9k on AT/eBay - Highest offer from any website has been £7,500 from Motorway, and more like £6,500 from others. So realistically looking around 70-85% - Which is why I'm definitely trying privately first!
I advertised a car on PH quite a few years ago at the same time as other sites and the only bite I had from the PH advert was from a number of very nice overseas Nigerian buyers that wanted to send me 3 times the value of the car and have it shipped over after I sent back the 2 3rds that was left over. Something to do with red tape their end, thats why they wanted to send me loads of extra cash for my 12 year old fiesta...

Free??? Wtf! I paid 30 quid! It's often said that selling privately is a PITA but I just don't see it myself.
You get to meet the next owner of your car, you can manage their expectations before they come to see it.
I just sold one of my cars I no longer needed (C220 estate). Stuck it on Autotrader, had several calls, the first chap that came to see it sent me a deposit beforehand to hold it until he drove the 200 miles to see it, it was as described so he bought it.
The previous car, I stuck on Car & Classic, sold to a trader who was again no hassle.
Even old sheds I've sold through Gumtree haven't attracted any of the idiots we hear about.
I've sold to overseas buyers in the past too and as long as funds are cleared before you release the car, I really don't see the problem.
PH is a good site to sell on but it has to be the right kind of car. I wouldn't have tried to sell the MB on here as it's too common a car. I wouldn't sell a classic through AT.

That's very true!When looking for a car, which I have done 4 times this year so far, I never spend more than 5mins looking through PH. difficult to filter, loads of paid stuff at the top of the page and mostly specialist cars going for big money.
