First off this isn't a bragging post - i haven't posted this on facebook etc, i haven't told mates etc or taken any pics. I also dont know anyone on here except a few people so i really want to make clear this wasn't some thing for 'likes'

Locally we have a facebook page which has about 25k members, a woman has been posting about her 13yr old son who has cancer frown he does seem to be doing ok and it appears he will make a recovery but his year and the parents has been unimaginable. He still has a long road ahead.

Last night the mum posted asking if anyone had any barbie dolls for a 6 yr old girl who goes to the same hospital with terminal cancer - even writing those words makes me well up as i sit her enjoying a steak with my 6yr old daughter.

I messaged her asking if there was anything else i could get and what does her son like?

So first thing this morning i went and got the young lad some seriously cool lego ninjago and the girl i got a couple of nice horse toys, my daughter helped me pick them.

In the afternoon i went round there (the girl is in hospital). i took their son out in my car and then took his dad out in my car, both of them fking loved it! It was so cool to see just how shocked the young lad was at such a thing hehe the dad properly loved it as well.

I gave the boy his lego, he was ecstatic with it and visibly impressed, tbh it was some really cool lego i wouldn't mind myself hehe he was such a lovely boy too, telling me chemo wasn't too bad (im sure it fking is tbh) and telling me he doesnt deserve all the stuff people have given him. A truly incredible statement from a 13yr old i thought.

I wish i could meet the girl, the bloke today told me she's such a sweet happy little thing, she just doesnt know whats coming frown again my eyes are watering from the dust in here just writing that. The pic she posted on facebook was really sad, she just looked fking broken frown

How fking cruel is this world? I spend my entire life in a state of panic, worrying about stuff that doesnt really mean much, the last few months i feel like i am having some kind of breakdown, i feel really stressed, really unhappy (all down to work) and then you see things like this and you remember that none of that stuff really matters.

I dont know what responses i will get, probably a few taking the piss maybe but i hope not. I hope to read about others doing nice things for random people.

I just hope they get some enjoyment from these things, it felt really good to make the boy happy, and his parents, it really did.

Nice one. There was a recent thread about random acts of kindness that this would have fitted into well.

There's a theory that one of the best things you can do if you're struggling is to help someone else. We're social creatures and the idea that you can make someone else's life better helps you realise that yours is worth something.

Yes. I had the worst period of my life and decided to join the Samaritans. I am still not fully recovered but feel that at least I’m doing something worthwhile.

That's awesome. It must take some strength to be able to do that kind of work, but absolutely priceless to the people on the receiving end. Hopefully it continues to be a virtuous circle for you.

It's apparent your charitable actions have not just benefited a young family
but has also given you a lift, a feeling that you can make a difference.

Well done.

To be able to help another person is one of life’s pleasures and benefits.

Excellent and well done.

Sorry, I should have checked what your car is. If it’s good, can I have a ride, too?

Profile says merc sprinter.
If it's white, then it's the fastest thing on the m6. Made the stoke run in less than 3 parsecs!

Even after all these years an Astramax would have it licked. Defo.

I volunteered for the Samaritans for a few years, it was quite harrowing tbh and after a repeated stalker incident that really spooked me I gave it up.

I currently volunteer with Shelter which I've found very rewarding personally by just being able to give something back to those in my wider community that really are struggling. It does however create more than pang of guilt when you step into your car to come away and then again when you get home.

The stalker thing is unlikely these days as they upgraded all their systems to voip with a single number as opposed to local calls to the local office. It’s not harrowing for me but quite an eye opener with regards to the turmoil that some people live with. And also how badly let down they are with regards to mental and even physical health.

I had to go into town this morning and on the way back to the car park cross a busy road at a light controlled crossing. Rather than press the button to stop the traffic as soon as I got there I waited until 20 or so vehicles had passed until there was a gap in the traffic so I could cross without holding anyone up.

I've no idea who the drivers were and I'll never find out but I hope they appreciated my thoughtfulness.
