I haven't seen this discussed recently (I did search, I found a post from 2006) but this is likely to get some press coverage soon by the looks of it. The camera works with AI to capture content and then apparently sends images to Australia to be checked by humans.

I would quite happily drive along a patch of motorway up and down all day with a sideways camera installed in a vehicle, say within your county borders on say the M1, booking people for being on a phone, camera takes the picture, uploads it somehow or to a card, send data to DVLA, ticket in the post.
Or even better have the ability to pull people over (unlikely for legal and safety reasons) but I would never, ever tire of it.

The amount of people I see on phones whilst commuting to work on a bike is actually disgusting.
Every single day I am on the bike I will see multiple people on phones. This is without even looking for it. You just know someone is on the phone, the way the car is positioned, the amount of time it takes to pull off, certain gaps between cars. Then you go past and there's the phone in the hand with the head down. The amount of people who have shat their pants when I rev the bike as I pass just shows people are not paying attention. One guy dropped his phone out the window of his van which was hilarious.
Phone use is not something I support or want to see on the roads. I think it's way more distracting and dangerous than speed ever could be.
I've often thought about getting a helmet cam and sending off footage of people on their phones whilst on the bike but there's so many people doing it it would take forever to get through the footage and send it off.
I do wonder though with devices like this, is every NIP reviewed by a human before being sent out? Maybe I should watch the video.

It's worth a watch but apparently all of the images captured that are deemed as being violations are checked by a human, in Australia. I would imagine that should this kind of system get installed in more places those human checks will move to a low-paid offshore factory at whatever location human life is least valued at that time.
I am happy with this but only if every penny goes to the government. If it doesn't this will be another cash cow for the "stakeholders" and not one single penny will be given to central government.

Enforcement would definitely help, I played a game on Saturday in Leeds and made a virtual £12500 in fines for cyclists (delivery riders) riding on the pavement in less than 2 hours, quite a few while messing with their phones on bikes that were flying along at quite a pace without needing any pedalling Without spending this money, just get a person to stand at the side of the road and see what is going on. They could sit on the back of my bike and make about £2000 a day I reckon. Or come and stand in our office window and watch people in the traffic caused by red traffic lights. It’s so easy to spot them. Without spending this money, just get a person to stand at the side of the road and see what is going on. I like this game, how much are your fines for each rider, I'd like to see how much I could collect for all the same legislation 'driving on the pavement' that people need to do to park on the pavement?J__Wood said:
