This has sort of fallen into my possession

2004 VW Passat 1.9tdi pd lump
93k miles
12months mot
full-service history, cambelt done 2020
rear brakes just done
even has Michelin tyres all round with 6mm remaining

The story goes i had been looking for a cheap second car for a while as we're all aware prices have rocketed. Ideally wanted a £30 a year tax bracket but everything under £1500 was a wreck

my friend's late dad owned this for years, no storage space meant it had to go and he didn't want it going to someone who would just run it into the ground etc... so it was sold to me for a very cheap price on the understanding it doesn't get flipped for a quick profit and when I'm done, he gets first refusal to buy back at same money, can't say fairer than that

His dad owned it for years and it's been well looked after unfortunately as his driving deteriorated it picked up a few scuffs on the corners etc... couple of dents on the arches little battle scars really. up until the last 12 months bodywork was mint

mechanically seems very well looked after so far, however there is a few niggles nothing major

trip home from picking it up. I'd forgot how smooth and torquey these old pd lumps are

few pictures of it

going to give it a good going over next time I'm free in the daytime give it a good clean inside and out
will look to get the dents pulled and the bumper corners tidied up. standard suspension and 65 profile 15" tyres make it ride like silk it soaks up every bump and pothole in the road

just ordered a 12v usb adaptor and some 3m leads so i can use the rear power outlet in the boot and put some charging leads in for the kids when they are in the back

a few of you may of seen my thread for my a45. this will be used as a cheap daily whilst leaving the merc for fun things. 60mpg vs 20mpg given the current economic climate is also no bad thing

I'm not sure how frequent updates will be I'll be working through the niggles its actually nice to have a car with a few issues that need addressing

Me dad had one of these, great car. Loved the torquey engine, pulled like a train. Was like trying to corner in a bouncy castle but great for long journeys.

We’ve got one of these - absolutely epic cars!
Ours turned over 100k miles and it is brilliant. Amazing on fuel, sort of weirdly fast, super comfy, best heated seats ever!
Don’t be tempted remap, standard clutches don’t take it (ask me how I know…).
The original wheels corroded and leaked on ours so it’s now on some wheels with winter tyres I got off eBay and feels unstoppable.
Only pain in the butt is the needlessly complicated front suspension which I’m slowly changing but should really just do the whole thing!
Enjoy some carefree cruising!

Definitely a good cruiser nice relaxing place to be. Handling certainly wasn't at the forefront for development I don't think

Definitely no remaps going on this. If I can update the interior and tech for reasonable money I'll be happy.

Steel wheels on this so hopefully no air leaks, no worries about kerbing wheels, cracking wheels. Just simple back to basics motoring

Yeah suspension arms galore under there. This rides without a single creak, rattle or groan out on the road seems to have been very well looked after in its life.

Brilliant cars. I have two with the 130 TDI PD engine, both running well. The auto is on 123k, the manual 243k

Great cars, good man for prolonging the life of this one and look forward to seeing further updates!

I had a b5.5 PD 4motion estate, that was a great car - never managed to get it stuck with the 'all season' tyres it had fitted, and powersliding a Passat Estate about in the snow was hilarious rofl

The engine is epic and worth a remap for smiles. I always wanted the 4wd one.

I can certainly the like for them. Got a few miles under its belt now. Chucked £40 worth of diesel in it and covered 100 miles so far. Range is still saying over 300 to empty!

It's a shame it's not a estate for space wise but the saloon hold's its own just a shame it feels like your posting things through a letterbox loading the boot up

Yeah I agree alot of these pd lumps are now way past their best. This is very smooth starts first turn of the key and there's not a squeak, rattle or groan from inside it.

This one has had a easy life so far and I don't wana start pushing things harder whilst it's had an easy life so far. As long as it gets me upto 60/70 and inset the cruise I'm happy tbh.

I leased a new one back in the day, it was really good. I still like how they look. I also did a few laps of the Nurburgring in it….

Good grief you were brave! I've only done a few laps on the m60 and the handling is erm 'soft' to say the least. Tbh it's like riding on marshmallows.

Good cars. I had a B5 1.9 TDI that had previously been a taxi. It was on 316k when I got rid. I think the build quality on these was better than the B6 that followed.

That's some mileage I'd like to think this has got a few miles left in it yet. I can see the introduction of CAZ in Manchester being it's demise and making it uneconomical to run hopefully it'll live on for a few more years yet

Covered 300 miles in it so far. The £40 of diesel I put in on the 1st has around 70 miles left and the fuel light has just come on! That's at a steady cruise on the motorway 65mph.

Everything turned up to plumb in the charging leads for the kids tablets so they are now happy

There was something catching when using the Aircon and switching the engine off, sounded like something rubbing on one of the cooling fans, found bonnet cable had unclipped and was resting on it nice easy fix

A famous Passat fault has been coming and going since buying osr door lock needs replacing. I suspect it's lack of use as if your in and out of the car alot during a day the lock actually starts to play along and function as intended. If then left overnight we start the game again. It's not top of priority list will look into when possible. I drilled a small hole in all of my mk2 Leon door locks and filled with wd40 which fixed them we'll see what happens can be opened manually for now

I've put various storage pockets/cargo nets in the boot and wil ok be putting velcro on bottom of a plastic storage box for when me and my eldest go magnet fishing to keep the pond juice from going on the car

I've hopefully sourced a front bumper to repair the badly scrapped, gouged front item in same colour it does a couple of scuffs but pictures look a lot better than mine fitted currently and for £20 I thought it was a no brainer

The gear knob annoyingly moves a 1/8 of a turn need to investigate but hopefully the clip which secures it just wants replacing with a regular jubilee clip.

Made a start on cleaning out all the door and boot shuts today trying to remove years of moss and grime build up. Needs a couple more hours but we're heading in right direction with it. It has been cleaned just not been kept on top of last 12 months and it's had minimal use

I'm managing with the original radio/cassette/cd changer but I'm keeping my eyes open for a cheap double din with dab function if one becomes available

Thanks for reading and Sorry for the long winded update with no pictures!

since my a45 was sold at beginning of Feb, this has been my only car at present whilst i wait for car prices to soften

being my only mode of transport thought id start to tidy up some of the small niggles that i have come across

first of all the gear knob was twisting side to side 1/8 turn whilst i was changing gear. the gaiter was worse for wear as well so thought id treat it to a new knob and gaiter through the ali express site. so fast forward a few weeks and having been shafted out of £2.95 it turned up

it was a generic one and the knob was incorrect but the base and gaiter was perfect so swapped them over and secured with a jubilee clip

that was the end result not perfect but looks a lot more presentable the gaiter was the only thing showing its age tbh inside

next up we had a couple of warning lights make a appearance

the EML came on which came back with fuel temp sensor on investigation i discovered a dusty old tuning box plugged in. on speaking to previous owner apparently this was supplied by vw when it was new. I think age has finally got the better of it and it has now gone faulty. removed box and cleared fault hasn't returned since and tbh the way i drive the car I'm never going to tell it was on there in first place

second warning was a brake pad warning light. checked front pads and found them low. ordered new old stock Tps economy range front pads for a massive £6.95 delivered

mileage is now up to 95.5k miles roughly I'm just about to finish my third full tank of diesel

one of the handbrake quadrants has started to stick so just in the process of ordering some caliper return springs for them to assist them

next up will be the front bumper replacement i bought to tidy up the front end, polished the headlight lens and replace both drive belts as they are looking past their best at present
